J.J. Watt criticizes NFL over huge international slate in 2026

The Los Angeles Rams are set to open their 2026 campaign in Melbourne, Australia, as the team will take on the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL’s first game down under. The NFL has rapidly expanded its international presence, hosting games on four different continents this season.

A record-setting nine contests are set to be played internationally in England, France, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia. The Rams, who have marketing rights in Australia and throughout the Pacific, are making a bold leap into the region.

However, there are concerns that these long flights are affecting the health of the players who are forced to endure overtraveling, compared to their domestic flights, while also dealing with the usual wear and tear of football.

NFL legend J.J. Watt spoke out against the expansion of the NFL’s international series on Wednesday.

Watt was joined by NFL veteran Kyle Van Noy, who expressed that the league’s efforts are driven by the almighty dollar, especially in an era where the league’s broadcasting rights are being fought for by networks and streaming services.

While the players have their gripes, the league is clear. The international series is expanding, and the league could, as well.
