Is Brock Purdy getting the star QB treatment from refs?

Brock Purdy has spent the better part of three seasons proving he belongs among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. Turns out, the officials may have already made up their minds.According to data shared by Warren Sharp, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback ranks top five among quarterbacks in roughing the passer calls drawn over the past two seasons — a distinction typically reserved for the guys whose names you already know are going to get that flag.

He is tied for fifth among 48 quarterbacks listed with Jacoby Brissett at 0.4% (three total penalties called). Only the Deshaun Watson (1.1%, three total), Justin Fields (0.9%, four total), Shedeur Sanders (0.8%, two total) and Dak Prescott (0.4%, 4 total) have more roughing the passer calls and/or a higher penalty rate per drop-back. Notably, some of the names you’d expect to be higher (Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen) are relatively: Allen and Mahomes both rank outside the top 20 at 0.2% (two total).

Purdy has been one of the better all-around quarterbacks over that stretch, regardless of the calls he may or may not get per drop-back. The 49ers quarterback completed 67.3% of his passing attempts for 6,031 yards, 40 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in 24 games with a 13-11 record.

This is a weird distinction overall, considering some don’t believe Purdy to be worthy of getting these roughing the passer calls. But on a per drop-back basis, the 49ers quarterback seems to get the attention enough from the referees to warrant the calls.
