How Shasta County students can apply for board of education seat

The Shasta County Office of Education has an opening for a student member on the county’s Board of Education for the 2026-27 school year.

Any student enrolled in a Shasta County public school who will be a junior or senior, and who isn’t the a child or grandchild of a current board member or cabinet level manager, is eligible to apply, SCOE said in the announcement.

Student board members will serve one year — from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027.

The board meets at least one evening a month, usually at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday. The meetings typically last between two and four hours.

How Shasta County high school students can apply for seat on board of education

Board members screen applications during the regular board meeting on April 15. Selection criteria include a completed application, school of attendance, each student’s background, their accomplishments and recommendations from one or more teachers, counselors or administrators, and from a fellow student.

The board will interview finalists at the May 13 board meeting or a special meeting, SCOE said. No more than two students will be selected.

Interested students can apply by emailing superintendentoffice@shastacoe.org or calling 530-225-0227 for an application. Applications are due no later than 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2.
