The first portion of a multi-day storm swept over the Coachella Valley on Thursday night and Friday morning, Nov. 20 and 21, bringing more moisture to what has proven to be a wet few weeks.
Over the past seven days, the western Coachella Valley has received over an inch of rainfall, a significant chunk of the 5.1 inches the area receives on average each year.
But more is on the way, bringing cooler temperatures and flooding risk.
How much has it rained in Palm Springs?
A light rain fell over the Coachella Valley Thursday night, with Desert Hot Springs receiving the most rain of any desert city. The city recorded 0.27 inches of rain as of 5 a.m., Friday, Nov. 21.
Palm Springs received 0.11 inches and Cathedral City 0.12. Further down the valley, Palm Desert reported 0.08 inches. Coachella saw more, with 0.35 inches.
What’s the forecast for Coachella Valley?
More rain is coming, with the chance of showers in Palm Springs estimated at 60% by the National Weather Service. The organization predicts between a 0.1 and 0.25 inches of rain are possible for the city during the day, while the evening could receive less then 0.1 inches.
NWS says there is a 60% chance of showers in the Palm Desert area, mainly between 4 and 10 p.m. Less than 0.1 inches are expected.
Each end of the valley is predicted to receive more rain than the middle throughout Friday. Coachella has a 70% chance of precipitation, with between 0.1 and 0.25 inches possible. As in Palm Desert, showers are expected to hit between 4 and 10 p.m.
The weather should clear by noon on Saturday, Nov. 22. A chance of showers of less than 0.1 inches is possible before 10 a.m. that day.
Weather prompts cancellations
Some events have been postponed or altered due to the recent weather.
The Cathedral City International Hot Air Balloon Festival announced its Friday events, including a headlining concert by Robin Thicke and Saturday morning balloon launches, have been cancelled.
But events the rest of the weekend are set to go on since the weather is expected to clear by midday Saturday. That includes Saturday’s tribute band performances and balloon glow at the Cathedral City Festival Lawn & Amphitheater, as well as Sunday’s morning balloon launches and “Brunch & Balloons” experience at The Westin Rancho Mirage.
The Coachella Valley Filipino Festival had already been postponed to from last weekend to Saturday, Nov. 22. It will proceed as planned at Downtown Park in Palm Springs.
