While Matthew Stafford’s wealth comes from his on-field ability, its rapid growth comes from his tremendous business acumen. On Thursday, Stafford signed a one-year extension for $55 million that could balloon up to $60 million, placing Stafford among the NFL’s top earners.
Stafford, one of the NFL’s elder statesmen, has earned over $400 million over his illustrious career. Following an MVP campaign in 2025, Stafford was set to enter the final year of his contract. With the extension tying him to Los Angeles through 2027, if Stafford plays two more years, he’ll be the first player in NFL history to exceed over $500 million in career earnings.
Stafford was already the first NFL player to exceed $400 million and is the highest career earner in league history.
Aaron Rodgers will join him at that mark this season, but with Rodgers set to retire after 2026, he will not challenge Stafford in the race to $500 million. Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen both have contracts that put them on pace to join Stafford and Rodgers in the $400 million club.
