Multiple ongoing state and local projects along heavily traveled roadways in Ventura County are expected to cause some traffic delays over the weekend and into the week of Sept. 22.
The California Department of Transportation, or Caltrans, and the County of Ventura have several long-term projects. Ojai Valley drivers may face some delays and closures along the northern section of Highway 33.
Lane closures can occur unexpectedly for several reasons, including falling debris and vehicle collisions. For updated closures visit: Caltrans QuickMap.
Where can you expect some snags in your commute?
State Route 33 north of Ojai
Caltrans has a safety and drainage improvement project on Highway 33 in the section located in the Los Padres National Forest.
The state route extends from Route 150 in Ojai to Route 166 toward Kern County and will experience full closures, according to Caltrans.
The route will be fully closed to public access at North Fork Matilija Creek Bridge from 10 p.m. Sept. 19 to 5 a.m. Sept. 22.
Motorists taking the secluded mountain route are advised to take Highway 126 to Highway 5 if heading toward Santa Clarita.
The project will continue into 2028 or 2029 and more intermittent full closures can be expected.
State Route 118 in Moorpark
Moorpark’s State Route 118 pavement rehabilitation project will see work on a nearly 3-mile stretch of Los Angeles Avenue until fall of 2027, said Caltrans spokesman Marc Bischoff by email.
Daytime shoulder and sidewalk closures and nighttime lane closures will occur intermittently throughout the stretch of highway from Spring Road to Montair Drive.
The right lane will be closed in either direction from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the corners where Los Angeles Avenue meets the following roads: Goldman Avenue, Flory Avenue and Millard Street. The daytime closures will take place from Sept. 22 to Sept. 26.
Motorists coming from the northbound direction of Route 118 can use Princeton Avenue into High Street to avoid Los Angeles Avenue. Drivers from Simi Valley, Somis and Camarillo can also take Tierra Rejada Road to reach the west side of the city.
Portions of State Route 232 in Oxnard
Caltrans State Route 232 pavement rehabilitation project in Oxnard spans a nearly 4-mile stretch of Vineyard Avenue and has an expected completion window of late 2026 to early 2027.
Route 232 is undergoing construction on sidewalks, curbs and shoulders on both northbound and southbound lanes.
Right lane closures are planned in both directions, starting at intersections from Strickland Drive to Riverpark Boulevard. The closures will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Sept. 22 to Sept. 26, according to a Caltrans District 7 social media post.
El Rio and Riverpark residents hoping to avoid any delays due to construction can take either Rice Avenue or Oxnard Boulevard.
Ventura Road in Oxnard
The Ventura County Public Works Agency started its project aimed at building a new flood break barrier for the Santa Clara River Levee in Sept. 8.
Construction will close northbound lanes from Stone Creek Drive to Wagon Wheel Road for six weeks until the project wraps up around Oct. 18, according to the agency. The lane closures are 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but construction and noise is expected from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Drivers coming or going to Oxnard on Highway 101 can avoid delays from the reduced lanes by going through Vineyard Boulevard or Oxnard Boulevard.
