Former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has spent the offseason unsigned and despite Sean McVay stating on multiple occasions that the team would love to have Garoppolo back, he was considering retirement.
The Rams moved in a different direction, proceeding to draft Ty Simpson. While it’s unclear if the Rams would’ve drafted Simpson if Garoppolo was still on the roster, the door has seemingly reopened for a reunion if both sides wish.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Garoppolo has decided not to retire and is open to playing this season if the right situation presents itself. That being said, Garafolo doesn’t think “anything is imminent” and “wouldn’t expect him to sign with anybody.”
“Maybe it’s going to have to be an injury to a quarterback and all of a sudden, you need a veteran guy to come in and be part of the mix, if not the starter,” Garafolo said.
Garoppolo has spent the last two seasons as the Rams’ backup, where he earned the respect of the organization for his efforts in helping the team prepare week to week. Garoppolo then took command of the offense when Matthew Stafford was forced to miss time during training camp and preseason due to back issues, where he fine-tuned the unit for Stafford to win MVP with.
Garoppolo engaged in talks with the Arizona Cardinals this offseason, as it appeared former Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur wanted to bring him to the desert. Negotiations fell apart, but interestingly enough, the Cardinals’ situation is not yet resolved.
