Former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Troy Hill spent 10 years in the NFL but after the 2024 season, he decided to trade in his cleats for a headset. Earlier this offseason, Hill was hired as St. Bonaventure High School’s new head football coach, his first foray into coaching.
It’s only fitting that Hill’s coaching start would come at his alma mater, returning home to Ventura, Calif., to take on this new role. Now a few months into it, he’s finding his footing as the head coach of the football team.
Hill recently spoke to Lorenzo Reyna of RG.org about his coaching job and the impact Sean McVay had on him during his time in Los Angeles. Hill says he’s using what he learned from McVay and applying it to his own team now, calling the Rams coach “one of the best” he’s ever been around.
“He’s one of the best I’ve ever been around, to be honest with you,” Hill said. “Just the way he goes about it. When I first came into the league, I saw how innovative he was. It was just exciting. And I’m trying to bring that same thing over here.”
Hill most recently played for the Rams in 2022 when McVay was the head coach and Raheem Morris was the defensive coordinator. Hill says he’s also drawing inspiration from Morris, who’s now the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. He sees similarities between himself and Morris.
“He kept it real with us,” Hill said. “And I think that’s where you can see the similarities are with me.”
McVay has a positive impact on just about everyone he comes across, so it’s hardly surprising to hear Hill is using what he learned during his time playing for McVay in his new role. He obviously can’t take exactly the same approach considering he’s coaching high school and not the NFL, but he’s having fun with this opportunity back home at St. Bonaventure.
