With training camp going on for all 32 teams across the league, some players have decided that they no longer want to continue their playing careers, including one former San Francisco 49ers draft pick.
On Tuesday, the Washington Commanders placed cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon on the reserve/retired list.
Witherspoon played collegiately at Sacramento City College in 2013 and at Colorado from 2014-16, earning All-Pac-12 honors once, before the 49ers took him in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. Over four seasons in San Francisco, he appeared in 47 games and started 33 while recording 117 tackles, 24 passes defensed, four interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Since 2021, Witherspoon has spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Rams before signing with Washington this offseason.
The 31-year-old missed most of the 2025 with Los Angeles after breaking his scapula in Week 2 and then re-breaking it again in the wild-card win over the Carolina Panthers.
