Five local girls water polo teams opened the CIF-Southern Section playoffs with victories.
Defending Open Division champion Oaks Christian defeated visiting JSerra 13-3 on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the first of three games in the Pool B division. Nicole O’Neill and Maryam Maamoun each scored three goals and Mia Fabros and Makena Bygrave added two goals apiece for the Lions.
Oaks Christian was set to play Corona del Mar on Saturday before finishing the its pool play with a game at Newport Harbor on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
Agoura defeated visiting Palos Verdes 15-11 in a Division 1 first-round game on Friday, Feb. 6. The Chargers will play at Dos Pueblos in a quarterfinal game Thursday.
Camarillo earned a 16-14 over visiting Rosary Academy in Division 2 on Thursday, Feb. 5. The Scorpions will play at Redondo Union in a second-round game Tuesday.
Malia Deneef had four goals, five steals and a drawn ejection, Juliana Magana finished with four goals, two drawn ejections and three steals, Deana Soto had four goals and three drawn ejections, and Camilla Cortez had a goal, four assists and a drawn ejection to lead Santa Paula to a 14-11 win over visiting Roosevelt in a Division 4 first-round game on Feb. 5.
The Cardinals (15-14) will play at top-seeded Tesoro in a second-round game on Tuesday.
Top-seeded Royal opened the Division 5 playoffs with a 19-6 victory over visiting Sierra Vista on Feb. 5. The Highlanders will play at Laguna Hills on Tuesday.
Buena lost to second-seeded Foothill-Santa Ana 13-6 in the first Division 1 playoff game in program history. Avery Buehner finished with three goals, three steals, two blocks, two earned exclusions and an assist, Maren Bursek had two goals, two blocks and a steal and also had three steals while playing goalie, Addy Bruno won both sprints she swam and had a goal, two assists, two steals and two earned exclusions, Suzy Hooper had an assist and a block, and Rylee Roberts had a steal for the Bulldogs.
In Division 2, Ventura lost to Westridge 12-11 in overtime at La Canada High. Delilah Safran scored five goals, Evie McLeod and Jenna Rippe each had two goals, Abi Bauerlin and Sienna Watson had a goal apiece, and Gia Osborne finished with 10 blocks for the Cougars.
Aspen Abernathy finished with two goals, three assists and three steals, Kira Jones and Abi Kerns both had two goals, and Avery Casey, Charlotte McAuliffe and Delaney McDonough all scored goals for Thousand Oaks in its 13-9 loss to visiting Woodbridge.
Calabasas lost to host Mira Costa 12-6.
In Division 4, Nordhoff lost to host Cypress 11-6.
