Two eastbound I-10 lanes reopen near Cathedral City after fatal crash

Two eastbound lanes on the I-10 have reopened near Cathedral City after a “major” multi-vehicle crash that may have resulted in up to two fatalities, but the two right lanes remain closed, the California Highway Patrol said late Thursday morning.

The traffic collision, involving an overturned semi-truck, was reported at 6:51 a.m. Thursday and prompted a SigAlert that remains in effect.

Two fatalities are suspected, and the SigAlert is expected to remain in place for several hours. As of 11:20 a.m., traffic is congested with stop-and-go conditions and delays of up to 30 minutes.

CHP is urging drivers to exit at Date Palm Drive and use Varner Road or Ramon Road as alternate routes.

This is a developing story.
