'Every 15 Minutes' program to bring staged car crash to Hesperia HS

A staged car crash will be set up at of Hesperia High School this week to help educate students on the dangers of intoxicated driving under the California Highway Patrol’s long-running “Every 15 Minutes” program.

The simulated disaster scene is scheduled to appear about 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the stadium of the campus at 9898 Maple Ave., organizers said.

“The mock collision will take place for approximately 90 minutes; however, the roadway may have delays for several hours to allow for scene set-up and breakdown,” school officials said in a written statement.

“During the mock collision there will be a high concentration of emergency vehicles in your area,” according to the statement. “We would like to ensure that the public is aware this is a mock emergency incident and that no real emergency actually exists.”

The Every 15 Minutes anti-DUI campaign takes place over two days.

Following the staged crash scene on Wednesday, the educational program will continue with a “mockfuneral and assembly for students” the following day.

“Every 15 Minutes is a two-day program which demonstrates to high school students the impact drinking anddriving has on friends, families, and their community,” the statement said. “The event includes emergency responses from police, fire, ambulance, coroner, public works, and tow-truck companies, just as an actual collision would require.”

In addition to Hesperia High School and the CHP, contributors to the endeavor include the SanBernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the San Bernardino County Fire Department, G&M Towing and others.

Funds for the Every 15 Minutes program are provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as well as the Hesperia High School ASB Student Account.
