The Philadelphia Eagles made a trade with the Minnesota Vikings for quarterback Sam Howell on Sunday morning. This deal jeopardizes UCLA alumnus Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s chances of cracking the 53-man Week 1 roster.
According to Ian Rapoport, the Eagles acquired Howell and a sixth round pick in 2026 for a 2026 fifth round pick and 2027 seventh round pick. The Eagles acquisition of Howell means they likely weren’t fond of what they saw from Thompson-Robinson or rookie Kyle McCord this offseason.
Thompson-Robinson had a rough preseason to say the least. According to ESPN, he completed 10-of-16 passes for 73 yards and an interception, which accumulated a 42.1 quarterback rating this preseason. McCord didn’t look much better with a 42.9 completion percentage, due to completing 24-of-56 passes for 191 yards, a touchdown, a pair of interceptions and a 43.1 quarterback rating, according to ESPN.
Early on in the offseason, Thompson-Robinson looked like he had a real chance to steal the third quarterback spot from the rookie, but it seems like the Eagles have pivoted to the former Washington Commanders 2022 fifth round pick.
According to Eagles Wire, Thompson-Robinson likely lost the quarterback three battle before the final preseason game, due to McCord being the only quarterback to play.
After his performance, Philadelphia must have wanted more security in their quarterback room, especially with the Eagles backup quarterback, Tanner McKee suffering a finger injury, which caused the pivot to veteran quarterback Howell.
What does all this mean for Thompson-Robinson? He is likely on his way out of Philadelphia and he will need a team to still have faith that he can turn his career around and be a quality backup or else his NFL career might be coming to an end.
