Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1 of the NFL season. That has not changed and was never in doubt to begin with. Behind him in the Raiders’ quarterback room, however, a lot has changed. Vegas’s backup quarterback spot might change hands and lead to a trade affecting Chip Kelly’s quarterback room. Raiders Wire has more:
“Las Vegas Raiders backup quarterback Aidan O’Connell has been the subject of constant trade rumors this offseason. In Saturday’s Week 1 preseason tie with the Seattle Seahawks, O’Connell was outperformed by rookie signal-caller Cam Miller. Miller appears to be winning the No. 2 job behind Geno Smith. Quality backup quarterbacks are always in demand. O’Connell will have a market if the Raiders are seriously considering trading him. A potential suitor recently emerged in the Tennessee Titans.
“The Titans’ backup quarterbacks were abysmal in their preseason opener. Playing behind No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle combined to throw three interceptions. Boyle was especially terrible, throwing a pick-six while completing just 4-of-13 passing attempts.”
The obvious question which arises if Aidan O’Connell is traded: Will the Raiders want a third quarterback or simply use the trade piece for depth on defense or on the offensive line? Chip Kelly and Pete Carroll have a lot to consider as the preseason moves along.
