Chargers OC Mike McDaniel warns fantasy owners of backfield committee

Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel revealed the plan for all three running backs: Omarion Hampton, Keaton Mitchell, and Kimani Vidal.

McDaniel said that he plans to use all three in every game.

“Bad news, fantasy owners. Good news is I see all three of those guys producing at a very high level. Bad news is I can’t tell you which games those are.”

McDaniel added the workload will depend on the opponent and “hot hand.”

McDaniel is expected to take the Chargers’ offense to another level. The offense has been dormant for the past few seasons, and the hope is that McDaniel helps that unit reach a new level.

Hampton is set to be the lead back. The former Tar Heel showed glimpses of what he could become in his rookie season in 2025, despite being limited to nine games because of a severe right ankle injury.

The injury is now behind Hampton, and he is expected to take a vital role in McDaniel’s offense.

As for Mitchell, McDaniel has praised him, saying the running back is a high-quality player who can be trusted with the ball. Mitchell is set to bring explosiveness and elusiveness to the backfield that perfectly complements Hampton.

Vidal is set to enter his third season in the league and is coming off a productive 2025 campaign. The 24-year-old earned a respectable 74.5 PFF grade, which ranked in the top half of qualified running backs.

McDaniel is expected to involve the Chargers’ running backs heavily. His plan is to involve them in space, utilize more 21 personnel, and create more explosive play-action opportunities to take the pressure off Justin Herbert.

The running back room has the potential to be among the best in the league with McDaniel’s help.
