Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater appears to be just fine after suffering an apparent injury during training camp.
Following the first padded practice on Tuesday, Herbert shared a positive update on Slater, smiling as he explained that the veteran tackle wanted to be on the field and remained in good spirits.
“He said he wanted to be out there, so I think that’s okay,” Herbert said.
Slater left Tuesday’s practice and spent some time in the medical tent before not returning. The 27-year-old was spotted spending time with family after exiting the medical tent.
Slater watched the rest of the practice. It’s unclear if Slater will miss practice time moving forward.
The two-time Pro Bowler is set to return in 2026 after missing the entire 2025 season with a torn patellar tendon. He suffered the injury during last year’s training camp.
The Chargers selected Slater 13th overall in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Before Slater suffered the season-ending injury last season, he signed a four-year contract extension.
Slater’s absence last season was detrimental to the Chargers’ offense and their line. Herbert endured a career-high 54 sacks last season, largely due to the absence of his top two tackles. Slater and Joe Alt combined to play just six games in 2025, with Alt missing most of the year because of a severe high ankle injury.
The offensive line was by far the weakest position group last season due to injuries to Slater and Alt. If all is right at the tackle spots and if the revamped interior offensive line does its job, Herbert and the offense should be firing on all cylinders.
