The bar has been set incredibly high for the Los Angeles Rams defense in 2026. After adding Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson and Myles Garret this offseason, all eyes are on Chris Shula’s new-look defense in Southern California.
Byron Young is an essential piece of the puzzle, too, and he’s not afraid to make bold predictions about how good the Rams can be on that side of the ball. He told Dan Graziano of ESPN that the Rams’ defense this season could be “the best to ever do it.”
“We could be the best to ever do it,” Young said. “I’m not afraid to put that out there. Coming off already being a good defense, adding those DBs and one of the best edge rushers to ever do it? Having that and already being the type of group that’s growing and getting better and kind of already established, there’s no telling what we can do.”
As good as the Rams look on paper, they could add another All-Pro talent to the equation relatively soon. Aaron Donald is training for a potential comeback, which seems more likely than not to happen.
If Donald does come back, the Rams will have one of the best defenses in football – at least on paper. Cornerback has become a strength, the defensive front is loaded and any concerns at inside linebacker will be masked by the rest of the talent around Nate Landman and Omar Speights.
And this time around, Young will be sure to utilize all the knowledge around him after feeling like he didn’t capitalize on the opportunity to learn from Donald in 2023.
“I think I was just young and didn’t understand the opportunities I had to get him to open up and help my game until he left,” Young told ESPN on Sunday about not taking full advantage of Donald. “So now, I’m not going to make that same mistake with Myles Garrett. I pick his brain all the time.”
The Rams will be must-see TV this season, which is why the NFL put them in prime time for almost half of their games.
