A 7-year-old boy who was struck by a car while riding a scooter in Apple Valley earlier this month has died from his injuries, while his father stands accused of child abuse for supervising the child while high on drugs, law enforcement officials said.
Isaiah Mendoza died at a hospital Friday, Aug. 14, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Gloria Orejel said.
The collision took place about 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, in the 21300 block of Outer Highway 18, near Kiowa Road.
The young boy was riding his scooter in the roadway when he was hit by a passing vehicle, according to a sheriff’s department statement. The involved driver remained at the scene and was cooparative.
The severely injured boy was rushed to a hospital by helicopter, where he died eight days later.
Deputies determined the boy’s father, 29-year-old Juan Gabriel Mendoza, was under the influence of drugs while supervising his son, sheriff’s officials said at the time.
He was arrested on suspicion of child abuse causing great bodily injury or death, county booking records show.
The father was released from jail on Tuesday, Aug. 11, pending legal proceedings after posting bail.
The suspect was also being sought on a bench warrant stemming from a prior allegation of disorderly conduct involving alcohol at the time, according to court records.
