Authorities have released the identity of a 92-year-old man who was fatally struck by an SUV while walking in Victorville over the weekend.
Roman Veloza Panitan Sr. of Victorville died at the scene of the collision, which took place about 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, along El Evado Road, just north of Dos Palmas Road, according to California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County coroner’s officials.
A woman Panitan was walking with was also struck by the SUV and hospitalized with major injuries, officials said.
The pedestrians had been walking along the right shoulder of southbound El Evado Road, according to the CHP.
“For reasons still under investigation,” a southbound Jeep Grand Cherokee struck them both, the agency said in a written statement.
Authorities said the driver of the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. DUI was not initially suspected.
The cause and circumstance of the collision remained under investigation.
Any witnesses, or anyone with information, can reach the CHP’s Victorville Area Office at (760) 241-1186.
