The San Francisco 49ers on Sunday worked out a trio of defensive ends as they try to mitigate the impact injuries have had on the position for them in training camp.
According to the NFL transaction wire the 49ers tried out defensive ends Diwun Black, Villami Fehoko and Ron Stone. With Nick Bosa still not practicing and Romello Height missing Sunday’s session for an undisclosed reason, the 49ers are still very thin at a DE spot that hasn’t had much stability in training camp. The 49ers have a couple more practices and a preseason game to get through before final cuts Aug. 30, so another DE would be helpful if Height’s ailment is going to force him out of practice time and the preseason finale.
Black hasn’t played an NFL snap after signing with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted rookie in last year’s draft. At Temple University Black had 15.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks across 19 games in his two seasons there.
Fehoko has been in the NFL since joining with the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. In six preseason games Fehoko has six pressures and no sacks while playing for the Cowboys and Washington Commanders.
Stone may be the most experienced of a group with no NFL regular season experience. He spent six seasons at Washington State University and had 200 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss and 16 sacks in 56 games.
It’s unlikely any of the three make the roster if they sign, but they are relatively young upside swings who might land on the practice squad if they play well.
