1 dead after train hits vehicle near Camarillo

At least one person died when a Metrolink train collided with a vehicle just south of Camarillo Monday afternoon.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash shortly after 2 p.m. near the intersection of Fifth Street and Las Posas Road, according to initial reports. CHP’s incident page lists the collision as fatal.

The man driving the SUV died at the scene, the CHP said in a news release.

A preliminary investigation indicated the man had been traveling southbound on Las Posas Road and stopped on the railroad tracks for a red light at Fifth Street. When the train approached the crossing arms and signals activated.

The SUV was still on the tracks when the train entered the crossing and struck the vehicle.

The crash, between a Metrolink train and a Lincoln SUV, at the rail crossing is the second in less than a week. On Tuesday, a train struck a tractor-trailer at Fifth Street and Rice Avenue, injuring one person who was a bystander.

Monday’s crash caused closures of Los Posas Road between Fifth Street, also known as State Route 34, and Pleasant Valley Road. The force of the crash tore through the vehicle and wrapped the crossing arm around the traffic signal.

Metrolink train 118 was carrying five passengers and two crew members, said Jeanette Flores, assistant director of public affairs for Metrolink. The train, headed to Los Angeles’ Union Station, was stopped after the incident, she said.

No one was injured on the train, according to the Ventura County Fire Department, which responded to the incident.

CHP said the crash is still being investigated. Anyone with additional information about the crash is asked to call the Ventura-area CHP office at 805-662-2640.
