Two hospitalized Thursday morning following Lapeer apartment complex fire

Two people were hospitalized following a three alarm fire in Lapeer County this morning, January 2.

Lapeer County Central Dispatch was called shortly before 8:10 a.m. about the blaze, with callers reporting the fire was at the Pines Lapeer West Apartments on Village West Drive, across from the Zemmer school campus in Lapeer. Callers reported seeing smoke and flames from an apartment unit facing Oregon Road, with Lapeer Fire and Rescue and Elba Township Fire departments first dispatched.

That was quickly followed by a second-alarm dispatch, and then a third-alarm, with Metamora Township Fire Department and the Attica Township Fire Department respectively dispatched to the scene. Also called to the scene were the Oxford and Davison-Richfield fire departments.

Firefighters worked to evacuate the building, with the two residents hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. A manpower strike steam was requested from the Attica, Almont, Dryden and Imlay City fire departments.

Authorities closed Oregon Road from Suncrest Drive to Millville Road to allow for fire equipment and ambulances at the scene.

While the building is not a total loss, several apartments did sustain major damage, according to authorities. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
