Woman hit by vehicle on Lodge Freeway in Detroit, dies

A driver suspected of hitting and injuring a pedestrian on the Lodge Freeway in Detroit early Friday has been identified, officials said.

Michigan State Police said dispatchers received calls about a pedestrian on the southbound Lodge Freeway near Clairmount Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. A short time later, they received calls that the pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle, according to authorities.

Troopers arrived at the scene of the crash and found multiple vehicles stopped along the freeway, and motorists standing around a severely injured woman, MSP said.

Medics arrived as troopers were clearing the motorists and their vehicles away from the scene, police said. The medics pronounced the woman dead.

Authorities have not yet identified the woman. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation revealed the driver who struck the victim failed to remain at the scene.

Officials said after police reviewed video of the crash, they identified and located the vehicle as well as its driver. Detectives obtained a search warrant for both.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and their findings will be submitted to the county prosecutor’s office for review.

Anyone with information about the crash or the suspected driver should call the Michigan State Police’s Metro South Post at (734) 287-5000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

The incident unfolded less than 48 hours after a pedestrian was injured while jumping clear of a vehicle that crashed into a Ypsilanti Township building.

Last week, a 33-year-old died after being hit by a commuter train in Ferndale, police said.

Last month, a woman died a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 94 near Nine Mile Road in St. Clair Shores.

Michigan State Police said on Tuesday that 12 people died on Michigan roadways over the previous week, raising the total number of traffic deaths to 153 so far this year.

In addition, another 82 people were seriously injured, bringing the statewide total of injuries from crashes to 756, the agency reported.

There are 14 fewer fatalities and 4 more serious injuries compared to the same period last year, state police data said.
