Reporter Ken Palmer got an interview this week with the daughter of Barb Cook, who you may remember is the 72-year-old Delta Township resident who intervened in mid-February when she saw a family getting attacked in the street where they were walking.
Cook confronted the man police say struck a family of three with his vehicle, then emerged with a shotgun and began shooting at the family. The couple’s three-year-old daughter was killed in the incident, and Cook was severely injured after she was struck repeatedly with the shotgun. Her husband Jerome came to her aid, and both were scheduled to be honored Saturday with a medal of valor from the Michigan Sheriff’s Association.
Barb Cook remains, nearly four months later, in the hospital, her daughter Mary Stuible of Dimondale told us. She said her mom, who doctors were concerned wouldn’t make it through the night of the attack, suffered brain injuries and is progressing through “a slow, gradual process toward awareness.
I think as a society we tend to overuse the word hero. That’s certainly not the case here, and it was good news to hear that Mrs. Cook continues to make a recovery.
Meanwhile, the year seems like it is flying by. Prom season is a wrap, and so is for the most part graduation season, with Lansing School District seniors walking Saturday and Williamston’s senior class scheduled to be honored Sunday.
