WNBA return means a lot to fans of Detroit basketball, women's sports | Letters

Although we’ve lived in Washington, D.C. for 24 years, we joyfully follow Detroit’s renaissance. Learning that Detroit heroes Jared Goff, Eminem, Grant Hill and Chris Weber are investing in the new WNBA team gives us great pride.

Detroit’s motto rings true today. “We hope for better things; it will rise from the ashes.”

More women’s sports coverage, please

As a longtime WNBA and women’s basketball fan, I’m thrilled by the game’s return to Detroit. I wish to challenge all Detroit-area media to expand coverage of all women’s sports.

These players display incredible talent and dedication, yet we rarely see their stories outside of the NCAA tournament season. The WNBA players, staff, and ownership deserve our attention. Share their stories. Inform us of their community partnerships, where they work tirelessly to encourage young girls in sports and in life. Give them a voice and help us all learn about the league before our new team’s arrival.

These women are incredible, and their stories are awe-inspiring. Give them the welcome they deserve.

WNBA return benefits more than just Detroit

The return of the WNBA to Detroit is bigger than the city alone or the others which will gain franchises.

First, it adds roster spots for very talented college stars and international athletes who otherwise would have been shut out by the current veterans. Future stars in developmental stages may stick with basketball if they know there’s a realistic future in the WNBA draft.

Second, it’s additive to the NBA-WNBA sphere, both in terms of excitement and crossover fans. It’s narrow thinking to assume that fans will need to choose between the new team and Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren and other impressive Pistons players and coaches. I’d argue that the WNBA has been even better at attracting new, young fans to the stands.

Finally, WNBA games are a lot of fun. As I learned from my own hometown team, once you’ve gone to one game, you’re hooked. In a sport which has come to rely on three-point shots and in-your-face defense more and more, the WNBA may just be the greatest show on earth.

Fortunately, the new media rights deal ensures more fans can watch it on TV too.
