Detroit Metro Airport was hit with a rash of flight cancellations Monday after weekend storms affected operations across the U.S.
As of Monday evening, there were 24 canceled arrivals at the airport, according to Detroit Metro Airport’s online flight tracker.
A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines, which accounted for at least seven of the cancellations, said airlines around the country were dealing with fallout from weekend storms.
Air traffic control restrictions create a backlog that can ripple through the system for days, leading to delays and cancellations far from the original bad weather.
“What you’re seeing is the residual effect of highly disruptive storms and ensuing air traffic control programs this past weekend that affected operations at all carriers,” Delta spokesperson Morgan Durrant said in an email to The Detroit News.
Parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic received flooding rain, winds up to 70 mph and reports of tornadoes on Saturday, according to a Fox Weather report.
On Sunday, severe thunderstorms produced damaging winds across the Carolinas, southeastern Virginia, the Tennessee Valley and the northern Plains, according to USA Today.
More storms were moving across the Midwest Monday evening.
Scattered thunderstorms, some causing lightning and high winds, are moving across a wide swath of the region, including places like Chicago, Milwaukee and Cincinnati Monday evening, the National Weather Service reported. Storms were expected throughout the overnight hours.
The weather system is expected to push into southeast Michigan around midnight, bringing the possibility of large hail, damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado. The worst conditions are forecast between 2-6 a.m., NWS reported.
