Cheboygan sophomore forward Brody McGovern was voted by readers as the Cheboygan High School hockey team’s preseason MVP after a poll that opened on Tuesday and closed on Friday at 5 p.m.
McGovern took first in the poll by capturing 51.29 percent of the vote. Senior defenseman Carter Kovacs finishes second with 42.76 percent of the vote.
Cheboygan opens its 2025-26 season with a 7 p.m. matchup at Painsedale-Jeffers on Friday. Cheboygan then travels to Negaunee for a 1 p.m. clash on Saturday.
Here were the preseason player of the year nominees:
Braxton Esper, Senior – Arguably Cheboygan’s best player in 2024-25, Esper had a prolific offensive campaign that included five goals in one of the games he played.
Daniel Harke, Junior – One of the breakout performers for Cheboygan last season, Harke was one of the top offensive players and is expected to be even better in this campaign.
Jackson Bancroft, Senior – Delivered a strong junior season as Cheboygan’s starting goaltender, performing at a high level in several games.
Carter Kovacs, Senior – Back to lead Cheboygan’s defense is Kovacs, who was a standout performer for the Chiefs in many games as a junior.
Hunter Belmas, Senior – One of the most experienced players on the Chiefs, Belmas returns and will be a top offensive threat on Cheboygan’s No. 1 line.
Brody McGovern, Sophomore – After delivering a solid freshman campaign, McGovern will look to progress even further as one of Cheboygan’s top young forwards.
