MSU baseball shutout by USC, ends season in quarterfinals of Big Ten Tournament

Michigan State baseball’s lengthy NCAA Tournament drought will continue following Friday’s season-ending loss in the Big Ten Tournament.

The Spartans’ improbable run to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament came to an end on Friday afternoon, with Michigan State being shutout by No. 4 seed USC. Michigan State fell behind early and were never able to capitalize on scenarios with runners in scoring position en route to a 7-0 loss to the Trojans.

Michigan State fell behind by four runs within the first three innings of the game. Then there was a lengthy rain delay, and following that, USC added three more runs in the fifth inning to blow the game open.

With the loss to USC, Michigan State has been eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament and their season is officially over. The Spartans needed to win the Big Ten Tournament to earn an automatic bid to have any chance of reaching the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan State ends the season with an overall record of 24-32. This marks the sixth time in the last eight complete seasons that the Spartans finished below .500 and is now the 14th consecutive season they’ve failed to reach the NCAA Tournament.
