Game 1 of the ALDS between the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners is here.
For nearly all of September, the ALDS felt like a drifting possibility for the Tigers as they stumbled to a 7-17 finish over the final month, the worst in the entire American League. But thanks to some great pitching and some perseverance at the plate when things weren’t going their way in the wild-card series, the Tigers earned their way into the second round of the MLB playoffs.
Unlike the Tigers, who had to fight tooth and nail just for a chance to get to this point, the Mariners cruised into the playoffs, clinching the AL West (their first since 2001) on Sept. 25 and then earning a bye.
The Mariners have spent the last week scrimmaging at T-Mobile Park in an effort to stay ready for the ALDS while the Tigers played the maximum three games, so this series will be a true test of rest vs. repetition.
As for the matchups, Our Man Ryan Ford gives a decided edge to the Mariners, starting with superstar catcher Cal Raleigh, AKA the “Big Dumper.” Watching the MVP candidate take on Tarik Skubal and the other pitchers that Tigers manager A.J. Hinch calls on will be among the most interesting storylines.
The Tigers-Mariners series starts on Saturday, Oct. 4, with an 8:38 p.m. first pitch, the last of four MLB playoff games that day.

Tigers record vs Mariners this season
The Tigers opened the season series by winning the first two games, but then lost the next four contests, including a sweep at Comerica Park leading into the All-Star break that ended up being a harbinger for what was ahead for the Tigers in the second half.
