A 27-year-old Waterford Township motorist is in critical condition after he struck a police vehicle this morning on M-59 in Rochester Hills.
The crash occurred at about 2:27 a.m., May 29, as Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies were investigating an unrelated incident on westbound M-59 between Crooks Road and Adams Road, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
The Waterford man, driving a 2018 Chevy Impala, was westbound when he struck the patrol car, which was positioned to block traffic and had emergency lights activated.
Rochester Hills Fire Department personnel transported the Impala driver to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Deputies were several yards away from the patrol vehicle at the time of the crash and were uninjured.
“I cannot overstate the safety and legal need to follow the law and move over one lane away from any stopped emergency vehicle,” Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard said. “These crashes are too common and often deadly. Please, pay attention, slow down and move over.”
