HILLSDALE COUNTY — Week 5 of spring sports is in the books, and it’s time to vote for the Week 5 HD Mechanical Heating, Cooling and Plumbing Supply House Athlete of the Week.
Readers can vote as many times as they want through Friday, May 9 at 11:59 p.m. In addition, we will make our own choice for who we think was the Week 5 Athlete of the Week.
Readers can view our pick with the results over the weekend. Coaches can submit nominations by Sunday morning each week in order to have an eligible nomination.
Additional coaches’ submissions can be made up to 24 hours after the poll has been posted. Only coaches’ submissions may be made and exceed the 10-nomination limit. Schools may have more than one nominee for different sports. Polls will be monitored for foreign IP addresses. Polls close at 11:59 p.m. Schools that win two polls in a row will not be eligible for the next poll but will be eligible for our honoree pick.
Nominees
Nice Muangprom – Hillsdale Boys Golf: The senior led the Hillsdale varsity boys golf team in individual play against Hillsdale Academy. He shot 41 through nine holes, hitting four pars.
Lincoln Knirk – Hillsdale Academy Boys Golf: The sophomore helped get the Academy their first SCAA jamboreee win of the season with a team score of 176 against Colon’s score of 183. Knirk tied teammate Kahle Welden and took home a score of 41 through nine holes. The duo tied again at the Jackson Area Purple Invitational where the team took fifth overall. Knirk and Welden each had a 79 final score. Knirk had 11 pars and a birdie. His nomination represents both athletes’ standout Week 5 efforts.
Hillsdale Academy Girls Track 4×400 Relay Team: The 4×400 team of Lucy Cote, Madison Sallows, Georgia Whalen and Caroline Roberts helped their school win an SCAA jamboree at Pittsford after taking first in their race with a time of 4:21.21. They would take first again as a group at the Erie Mason Invitational, posting an even faster time of 4:15.28.
Makinlee Packer – Jonesville Boys Track and Field: The senior helped the 4×100 team win a dual event against Homer with a time of 47.32. He also helped the 4×200 team win with a time of 1:34.54. He took first in pole vault with a clearance of 12-feet. He also won a long jump event with a new career PR of 19-feet, 7 1/2 inches.
Pittsford Boys Track 4×200 Relay Team: The team of Mondale Kneffler, Noah Pann, Teagan Williams and Brendon Nave won their race at the home SCAA jamboree with a time of 1:37.10. They won another event at the Quincy Oriole Classic with a similar time of 1:37.34.
Carsen Cornila – Jonesville Baseball: There were many standout Comet baseball performers in Week 5, but junior Carsen Cornila was the one who had the RBI double-base hit to defeat Napoleon in a 5-4 final to secure one of their three wins during the Week. Overall for the week, the junior had six hits, including four doubles, eight RBIs and three runs.
Desman Lawless – North Adams-Jerome Baseball: Lawless won two games on the mound for the Rams in Week 5. He had six strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings against Litchfield in a 10-4 final, giving up just three hits and two earned runs. In the 15-1 win over Pittsford, the freshman had 11 strikeouts in five innings. He gave up just one earned run on seven hits. For his week at-bat, he had six hits, three doubles, five RBIs and six runs.
Madison Pickford – Pittsford Softball: Pickford was one of the top performing athletes regardless of sport in Week 5. The freshman had 12 hits, six doubles, one triple, 11 RBIs and seven runs helping the team win three games in Week 5.
MaKenzey Penza – Reading Softball: In one doubleheader, Ranger MaKenzey Penza had two homers, one double, two RBIs and three total runs scored. One of her homers helped the Rangers take a game against Stockbridge.
Regan Schaedler – Camden-Frontier Softball: In a high-scoring week for Redhawk softball, Schaedler had 11 hits – including a double, triple and a homer, seven runs and three steals.
