USA Today staff goes around the state of Michigan in 250 athletes

With the United States celebrating its 250th birthday, the USA Today Network has selected its top 250 athletes from around the state.

This is truly around the state as it will not include Detroit and Lansing areas (whose papers will do their own list). It is also not a ranking of the top 250, but a top 10 from all other regions of the state for the most part, giving it a balance across Michigan and reminding us all that greatness comes from everywhere.

The athletes are broken down by region (Holland, Grand Rapids/Muskegon, Battle Creek/Kalamazoo/Benton Harbor, Livingston, Flint, Ann Arbor-Jackson, Adrian, Monroe, Sturgis, Mid-Michigan, Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

It was compiled by USA Today sports editors Dan D’Addona (Holland), Drew Kochanny (Petoskey), Dylan Jesperson (Gaylord), Jared Greenleaf (Cheboygan), Bill Broderick (Battle Creek), Brandon Watson (Sturgis), Niles Kruger (Monroe) and Brenden Welper (Port Huron).

HOLLAND REGION

MALE

Kirk Cousins, Holland Christian

The Holland Christian graduate starred at quarterback at Michigan State before becoming a four-time Pro Bowler in the NFL with Washington, Minnesota, Atlanta and Las Vegas.

Chris DeJong, Holland

The Holland High School graduate was a three-time state champion swimmer before becoming an All-American at Michigan and earning a spot on Team USA. Missed the 2004 Olympics by hundredths of a second.

Vic Amaya, Holland

After starring on the tennis courts in Holland and at Michigan, Amaya went on to earn the world No. 15 ranking in 1980, winning three singles titles on the ATP and six doubles titles, including the French Open in 1980. He was runner-up in doubles at the 1982 U.S. Open.

Jim Kaat, Zeeland

The left-handed pitcher from Zeeland played at Hope College then played 25 years in the major leagues, mostly for the Minnesota Twins. He won 283 games and 16 Gold Glove Awards and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022.

Blake Dunn, Saugatuck

The four-sport all-state athlete starred in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was a state champion hurdler, top quarterback in the state and the school’s all-time basketball leading scorer. He played baseball at Western Michigan before joining the major leagues with the Cincinnati Reds.

Jay Riemersma, Zeeland

A multi-sport star at Zeeland, the quarterback turned to tight end at Michigan and went on to play eight seasons in the NFL, scoring 23 touchdowns.

Ron Essink, Zeeland

Essink was a state champion wrestler and played football at Grand Valley State before playing six years in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks.

Grant Wolfram, Hamilton

A three-sport athlete in high school, Wolfram was an all-state baseball player, all-conference basketball player and one of the top tennis doubles players in the state. He played baseball at Central Michigan and Davenport before pitching in the major leagues for the Baltimore Orioles.

Kyle Steigenga, Holland Christian

Steigenga was an all-state football, basketball and track star for the Maroons before becoming the all-time college basketball leading scorer in the state of Michigan at Cornerstone, where he was NAIA National Player of the Year.

Ameer Ismail, West Ottawa

A standout linebacker went on to play football at Western Michigan where he was MAC Defensive Player of the Year and an NCAA All-American. He was an NFL practice player for Kansas City before playing in the CFL and Arena league. Was all-conference basketball player and state qualifier in track and field.

Eric Solis, Holland

The most decorated boys swimmer in area history, Solis won six individual state championships and was twice named state swimmer of the year before going on to swim at Florida, then Arizona.

Rob Renes, West Ottawa

This state champion wrestler was a football star who went on to start at defensive tackle for Michigan’s 1997 national championship team.

FEMALE

Kathy Arendsen, Holland Christian

The Maroons softball pitcher led Holland Christian to a state championship then was the starting pitcher for Team USA softball.

Nicole Artz, West Ottawa

Artz was an elite club gymnast and also a strong softball player. She went on to become a multi-All-American at Michigan in gymnastics, leading the Wolverines to the NCAA Championships.

Courtney Bartholomew, Holland

The six-time individual state champion and junior national champion was one of the top swimmers in state history, setting the all-time record in the 100 backstroke. She went on to become an NCAA All-American and five-time runner-up at Virginia and was on Team USA when she broke the American record in the 100 backstroke in short-course meters, then was part of the USA’s world record 400 medley relay.

Taylor Garcia, Holland

Garcia is Michigan’s all-time leader in total state championships with 17 (eight individual, six relay and three team). She went on to become an All-American at Michigan.

Gabby Reynolds, West Ottawa

The three-time all-state guard was the winner of Miss Basketball of Michigan as a senior. She went on to start at George Washington, earning all-conference honors.

Emily Bos, Holland

Represented the U.S. at the junior level. Won six individual state championships before becoming an NCAA All-American for Auburn.

Alyssa Garvelink, Holland Christian

The Maroons star was an all-state volleyball player and finalist for Miss Volleyball. Went on to become an All-American at Michigan State and plays professional in the top level of the U.S., Major League Volleyball, with the Grand Rapids Rise.

AJ Ediger, Hamilton

Ediger was first-team all-state twice in volleyball and basketball, leading the Hawkeyes to the state semifinals in basketball and quarterfinals in volleyball. Went on to play basketball at Iowa.

Ana Capotosto, Saugatuck

All-state in volleyball, basketball, track. Was a track state champion and top basketball player in the area before playing Division I basketball at Toledo where she started and was team captain.

Emily Oren, Hamilton

The all-state runner went on to become NCAA champion in the steeplechase multiple times at Hillsdale before earning a spot on Team USA with her performance at U.S. Nationals.

Carissa Verkaik, Holland Christian

This all-state basketball star led the Maroons to the state semifinals before becoming a four-time All-American at Calvin, winning the Jostens Trophy as player of the year as a senior.

Sophie Riemersma, Zeeland East

The Chix graduate was a three-sport star in high school. She was all-state in volleyball and the high jump multiple times and is the all-time basketball scoring leader. She went on to star at Miami Ohio in volleyball.

Suenomi Norinh, Zeeland East

One of the most versatile and flexible athletes in area history, she almost single-handedly won the state championship in track and field as a senior when she won the high jump, long jump, 300 hurdles and was second in the 100 hurdles. She went on to compete at Missouri.

Bria Schrotenboer, Hamilton

This soccer star went on to play for the U.S. National U-19 team in high school. She also was an all-state basketball player who lead Hamilton to the state semifinals. She went on to play soccer at Michigan State and Duke.

ANN ARBOR REGION

MALE

Evan Bates, Ann Arbor

This ice dancer paired with his wife and partner Madison Chock are two-time Olympic gold medalists in the team event and won the silver medal at the 2026 Olympics. They are three-time world champions.

Jim Harbaugh, Ann Arbor

This quarterback grew up in Ann Arbor and played through his junior season at Ann Arbor Pioneer before moving to California. He was a star quarterback who ended up starting for the University of Michigan and playing more than a decade in the NFL, making the Pro Bowl. He went on to coach Michigan to a national championship.

Lavell Blanchard, Ann Arbor

This basketball star led Ann Arbor Pioneer to the 1999 state championship and was Gatorade National Player of the Year. He went on to become a four-year starter at the University of Michigan, becoming the fifth player in NCAA Division I history to lead his team in scoring and rebounding for four seasons. He went on to play several years in Europe.

Brian Rolston, Ann Arbor

This NHL star was born in Flint before relocating to Ann Arbor to play with the USA program. He was the second pick in the 1991 NHL draft. He starred at Lake Superior State, leading the Lakers to the NCAA championship as a freshman, earning Most Outstanding Player for the tournament.

Rodney Holman, Ypsilanti

This Ypsilanti native was an all-state football player and wrestler. The tight end went on to play at Tulane University then the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL where he made three Pro Bowls and was a three-time second-team All-Pro. He retired with the second-most games played in the NFL by a tight end.

Mark Grimmette, Ann Arbor

This Olympian was born in 1971 in Ann Arbor. He won the silver medal in men’s doubles luge in 2002 in Salt Lake City after earning the bronze in 1998 in Nagano. He is a two-time silver medalist and seven-time bronze medalist at the world championships.

Ian Gold, Ann Arbor/Belleville

Born in Ann Arbor, Gold moved to Belleville in high school and starred in football earning all-state honors. The linebacker went on to play for Michigan, helping the Wolverines to the 1997 National Championship. He played eight seasons in the NFL and was named to the 2002 Pro Bowl.

Charlie White, Ann Arbor

Born in Dearborn, this Olympic ice dancer moved to Ann Arbor, still his home town, after attending the University of Michigan. He and partner Meryl Davis won the 2014 Olympic gold medal and the silver in 2010. They are two-time world champions.

Bryce Underwood, Belleville

This Mr. Football of Michigan winner won the award two times and now plays for the University of Michigan as the starting quarterback.

Kris Jenkins, Belleville

A star defensive tackle at Belleville, he went on to play in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets. He was named to four Pro Bowls during his career.

Keith Bostic, Ann Arbor

This football star went to Ann Arbor Pioneer before starring at the University of Michigan as a safety, earning first-team All-Big Ten. He went on to play eight seasons in the NFL and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1987 while playing for the Houston Oilers and leading the AFC in interceptions.

Aaron Krickstein, Ann Arbor

Born in Ann Arbor, this tennis star made the semifinals at the U.S. Open in 1989 and the semifinals at the Australian Open in 1995. He reached the fourth round twice at both the French Open and Wimbledon. He won nine career ATP tournaments and was named to the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2025.

Zeke Jones, Ypsilanti

Born in Ypsilanti, this wrestler won the silver medal at he 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. He won the world title in 1991 then went on to become the USA Wrestling freestyle head coach.

Tony Dungy, Jackson

A Jackson native, this former NFL safety and Hall of Fame coach, led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts for 13 seasons, becoming the first Black head coach to win a Super Bowl (XLI with the Colts).

Karch Kiraly, Jackson

Born in Jackson, Kiraly is widely regarded as the greatest male volleyball player of all time. He won Olympic gold in both indoor (1984, 1988) and beach volleyball (1996) and led UCLA to three national titles.

Antonio Bass, Jackson

The Jackson High School football standout set the school record for most career touchdowns with 45. He was named first-team all-state, as well as an All-American before taking his talents to Ann Arbor to join the University of Michigan football program, but a serious knee injury his sophomore year cut his playing career short

Jack Hughes, Canton

The NHL All-Star was drafted No. 1 overall in 2019. He graduated from Plymouth-Canton Educational Park. He scored an overtime winner for Team USA in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Don Dufek, Ann Arbor

Following in his father’s footsteps, Dufek played football at Michigan. He was drafted by the NFL and the NHL, choosing football and playing nine seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Mike Mondano, Livonia

This Hockey Hall of Famer is one of the top U.S. born hockey players in history. He played 21 seasons in the NHL with the Stars and Red Wings, leading the Stars to the 1999 Stanley Cup.

Emoni Bates, Lincoln

This basketball star was the first sophomore to ever win Gatorade National Player of the Year. He went on to play at Memphis and Eastern Michigan before being drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Paul Terek, Livonia

This Livonia Franklin graduate was a 2004 Olympian in the pole vault and decathlon. He was NCAA runner-up twice at Michigan State. He is a two-time national champion in the indoor heptathlon.

FEMALE

Vivian Kellogg, Jackson

Kellogg is a former baseball player in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II with the Minneapolis Millerettes and Fort Wayne Daisies.

Kara Lynn Joyce, Ann Arbor

This Pioneer graduate was a three-time Olympic swimmer, earning four silver medals. She set five state records as a senior, then went on to dominate the spring freestyle events at Georgia, winning the 50 and 100 freestyles multiple times and became the first to win the 50, 100 and 200 in one year. She won the Honda Sports Award as top collegiate athlete.

Allison Schmitt, Canton

This Canton star swimmer was an NCAA champion at Georgia and went on to become a 10-time Olympic medalist, making a stunning four Olympic Games, named captain of two teams. She broke the Olympic record in the 200 free in London in 2012 in one of the greatest performances in Olympic swimming history.

Annette Salmeen, Ann Arbor

This Huron High School star swimmer went on to become a Rhodes Scholar at UCLA where she swam, winning an NCAA title in the 200 butterfly. She went on to swim in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, earning a gold medal as part of the American 800 freestyle relay team. She was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

Betsey Armstrong, Ann Arbor

This Huron graduate was one of the top water polo goalies in history. She played goalie at the University of Michigan then was part of the U.S. national team, playing in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, earning silver and gold, respectively. She was named water polo player of the year in 2010.

Meryl Davis, Ann Arbor

Born in Dearborn, this Olympic ice dancer moved to Ann Arbor, still her home town. She and partner Charlie White won the 2014 Olympic gold medal and the silver in 2010. They are two-time world champions.

Jennifer Song, Ann Arbor

Born in Ann Arbor, this LPGA Golfer won the U.S. Women’s Amateur. She played at USC and was the No. 3 player in the NCAA. She has won two pro tournaments and earned three top-10 finishes at LPGA majors.

McKenzie Siroky, Livonia

A stunning dual sports threat, this Livonia Stevenson graduate was a state champion swimmer and also played on the boys hockey team. She swims at Tennessee and has been on the U.S. National Team for swimming.

Lisa Bonder, Saline

This Saline hometowner was a tennis star who won four titles on the WTA Tour. She reached the quarterfinals at the French Open in 1984 as well as the fourth round in both the U.S. Open and Wimbledon that year. During her career, she upset tennis legends Chris Evert and Mary Joe Fernandez.

Madison Chock, Ann Arbor

This ice dancer paired with her husband Evan Bates and are two-time Olympic gold medalists in the team event and won the silver medal at the 2026 Olympics. They are three-time world champions.

Abby Tamer, Whitmore Lake

This field hockey star is a three-time international medalist for Team USA. She went on to play in the FIH Pro League.

Eva Gaetino, Dexter

Born in Chesapeake Virginia, Gaetino moved to Dexter at a young age, joining the Michigan Hawks at age 7. She went on to play soccer at Notre Dame and was named an All-American and ACC Defensive Player of the Year. As a pro, she has played with Paris Saint-Germain and the Denver Summit. She was part of Team USA in 2024.

Cindy Ofili (Sember), Ypsilanti

Born in Ypsilanti, she competes nationally for Great Britain. She ran track at the University of Michigan and was a 2016 Olympian, finishing fourth in the 100 meters. She is a two-time international medalist.

Kirsten Simms, Plymouth

A sensational hockey player, Simms is a member of the gold medal winning USA women’s hockey team. She also led Wisconsin to three NCAA championships.

Alison Gregorka, Ann Arbor

A standout water polo player, Gregorka was born in Ann Arbor and represented the U.S. at the Olympics, winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics and two gold medals at the world championships.

GRAND RAPIDS/MUSKEGON REGION

MALE

Bobby Grich, Muskegon

Born in Muskegon, Grich moved to California before high school. He was an elite baseball player, earning six All-Star selections in the MLB with the Baltimore Orioles and California Angels. He won four Gold Glove Awards at second base and won one Silver Slugger honor.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., Grand Rapids

This Grand Rapids native is one of the greatest boxers in history, earning a 55-0 professional record. He won 14 major world championships spanning five different weight classes – from super featherweight to light middleweight. He won three U.S. Golden Gloves titles and is enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Dathan Ritzenhein, Rockford

A three-time Olympic runner , he competed twice in the 10K and once in the marathon. He ran at Colorado and was a bronze medalist at the World Half Marathon Championships and World Cross Country Championships. He finished 11th in the 2006 New York Marathon and 11th in the 2009 London Marathon.

Gary Hogeboom, Grand Rapids

This Northview graduate went on to play football at Central Michigan. The quarterback led CMU to its first MAC title in 1979. He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1980 and went on to play 11 seasons in the NFL and threw 49 touchdown passes.

Earl Morrall, Muskegon

A Muskegon High School graduate, Morrall played quarterback at Michigan State and made it to the NFL where he led the Baltimore Colts to the NFL Championship and a spot in Super Bowl III and V, leading a late charge for a Super Bowl V win. He was league MVP in 1968 for the 13-1 Colts. He was part of the Miami Dolphins perfect season in 1972 when he was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He was a two-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection. He threw 161 career touchdown passes.

Joey Staley, Rockford

This Rockford native was a star football player at Central Michigan before becoming a first-round NFL Draft pick of the 49ers. The offensive lineman went on to earn six trips to the Pro Bowl and was a three-time second-team All-Pro selection. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s.

Justin Abdelkader, Norton Shores

This Muskegon Mona Shores graduate led Michigan State to the 2007 NCAA hockey championship, scoring the game-winning goal in the title game. He was named Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player. He was drafted by the Red Wings and played 13 years in Detroit, scoring 106 career goals.

Luke Glendening, East Grand Rapids

This East Grand Rapids graduate went on to play at Michigan, leading the team to two Frozen Four appearances. He signed with the Grand Rapids Griffins in 2012 and the Red Wings in 2013 and played 14 years in the NHL with 86 career goals.

Brian Diemer, Grand Rapids

This South Christian high school graduate won the bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics in the 3,000-meter steeple chase. A decade later the Michigan All-American was silver medalist at the Pan American championships.

Mickey Stanley, Grand Rapids

This Grand Rapids native was a mainstay of the Detroit Tigers in the 1960s He won four Gold Glove Awards for his defense in centerfield but moved to shortstop for the 1968 World Series to give the offense a boost and it worked as the Tigers beat the Cardinals in seven games.

Chris Kaman, Wyoming

The Tri-unity Christian all-state player went on to star at Central Michigan, leading the Chippewas to the NCAA tournament as a junior. CMU was a 12-5 upset winner over Creighton and lost to Duke in the second round. Kaman named MAC Player of the Year and was drafted No. 6 overall that year by the Clippers. He went on to play 14 seasons at center in the NBA and was an All-Star in 2010.

Bennie Oosterbaan, Muskegon

A well-rounded athlete, Oosterbaan was a three-time All-American in football at Michigan. He was also a two-time All-American in basketball and an All-Big Ten selection in baseball. Sports Illustrated named him fourth-greatest athlete ever from Michigan in 2003. He went on to coach Michigan football to national championships in 1932, 1933 and 1947 as an assistant and 1948 as head coach.

Don Nelson, Muskegon

This Muskegon native played basketball at Iowa before playing several years in the NBA, winning five titles with the Boston Celtics, who retired his number in 1978. He went on to become a Hall of Fame coach and is second all-time in regular-season wins in the NBA.

Russell Vis, Grand Rapids

Born in 1900, Vis was a star amateur and professional wrestler. He was an AAU national champion and went on to win the Olympic gold medal in 1924 in Paris in the freestyle lightweight division. He was elected to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1977.

Nate McClouth, Whitehall

Born in Muskegon he won Michigan Mr. Baseball in 1999 when he was an honorable mention All-American. He was the Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year in 2000. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 25th round and reached the majors in 2005. He played 10 years in the majors and was an All-Star and Gold Glove outfielder in 2008.

Joel Smeenge, Hudsonville

This football player was a star defensive end at Hudsonville High School before moving on to play at Western Michigan. He was drafted in the third round by the New Orleans Saints in 1990 and played 12 years in the NFL. He totaled 236 tackles and 35.5 sacks in his career.

David Kool, Grand Rapids

Born in Battle Creek, Kool attended Grand Rapids South Christian and was the 2006 Mr. Basketball winner. He scored a Class B-record 43 points in the title game in 2005, leading the Sailors to their second title in three years. He played at Western Michigan and become the Broncos’ all-time leading scorer.

Drew Neitzel, Wyoming

Born in Grand Rapids, this Wyoming Park graduate was the Class B basketball player of the year in 2004. He went on to play at Michigan State where he earned All-Big Ten honors and second-team All-American. He is MSU’s all-time leader in free-throw percentage (.866). He is in the top five all-time at MSU in assists, 3-pointers made, games played and games started. He played with the Minnesota Timberwolves summer league team then went on to play several years in Europe.

Loy Vaught, Kentwood

Starring on the basketball court at East Kentwood, Vaught went on to start on Michigan’s 1989 NCAA title team. He played 12 years in the NBA, averaging 16.2 points and 10 rebounds per game from 1994-97.

Cade McNamara, Kentwood

This quarterback played at East Kentwood before leading Michigan to a Big Ten title and College Playoff berth before transferring to Iowa.

Kevin Grady, Ada

Grady starred at running back at East Grand Rapids High School before moving to the University of Michigan. He was named the EA Sports National Junior Player of the Year in 2003, leading the Pioneers to consecutive state titles. He holds the MHSAA record for most rushing yards (8,431) and most touchdowns (151).

Luke and Murphy Jensen, Grand Rapids

This pair of tennis brothers went to East Grand Rapids High School. Luke won the state championship at No. 1 singles and was ranked the No. junior player in the world in 1984. They teamed up and won the French Open doubles title in 1993.

Isaac TeSlaa, Hudsonville

Starred at football as quarterback and led Hudsonville Unity Christian to the state title as a junior. He also helped the basketball team to a state championship. He switched to receiver and signed with Hillsdale before transferring to Arkansas where he thrived. He was a third-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2025.

John Vander Wal, Hudsonville

This Hudsonville native was drafted by the Houston Astros in 1984 but opted to play at Western Michigan. He was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1987 and played 15 years in the majors becoming one of the best pinch-hitters in baseball history.

Devin Booker, Grandville

This Grandville native played at Kentucky before being selected by the Phoenix Suns in 2015. He has been a five-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection. He is the Suns’ all-time leading scorer and has won two Olympic gold medals for Team USA.

Don Morehead, South Haven

This South Haven native became the starting quarterback for the University of Michigan in 1969 and 1970 where he set 24 school records. He went on to play in the Canadian Football League.

Xavier Tillman, Grand Rapids

He played basketball at Forest Hills Central then Grand Rapids Christian. He earned all-state honors and was a Mr. Basketball finalist. He played at Michigan State and was drafted by the Sacramento Kings. He was traded to Memphis and played in the NBA for seven seasons.

Chet Walker, Benton Harbor

The Tigers basketball star went on to become an All-American at Bradley University. He was drafted No. 12 in 1962 and played 13 seasons in the NBA, helping the 76ers win the title in 1967. He was a seven-time All-Star and was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Wilson Chandler, Benton Harbor

Mr. Basketball of Michigan in 2005 went on to play at DePaul University. He was a first-round draft pick in the NBA and played 13 seasons in the NBA, mostly with the Denver Nuggets.

Jordan Brewer, St. Joseph

A baseball star who went on to win Big Ten Player of the Year in 2019 for Michigan, he helped the Wolverines reach the College World Series finals and was drafted by the Astros in 2019.

FEMALE

Kysre Gondrezick, Benton Harbor

The 2016 Miss Basketball winner was the Gatorade Player of the Year. She finished with the second-highest career scoring total (2,827) in state history. She played in the WNBA for the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever.

Erika Biestle, Rodney

The Big Rapids High School Graduate went on to throw at Grand Valley State University, earning multiple NCAA championships, breaking the NCAA record in the shot put. She finished fourth at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials and earned a spot on the national team.

Katie Feenstra, Grand Rapids

Attending the small Grand Rapids Baptist High School, this 6-7 basketball player went on to play at Liberty University. She was drafted by the Connecticut Sun, eight overall, in 2005. She played in the WNBA for five seasons.

Jennifer Crisman, Jenison

This state champion swimmer went on to win four consecutive Big Ten 100-yard backstroke titles. She was an NCAA All-American at Michigan and swam at the Olympic Trials. She was also an alternate on the U.S. Water Polo Team.

Marion Ladewig, Grand Rapids

Born Marion Van Oosten in 1914 in Grand Rapids. She was the national female bowler of the year a record nine times between 1950 and 1963. She is the only woman in bowling history to win the WIBC city, state and national championships in the same year (1951).

Jessica Merchant, Wayland

The Wayland High School gradate was Michigan Gatorade Softball Player of the Year. Captain of the University of Michigan softball team that won the Women’s College World Series in 2005. She went on to play professionally for four seasons in the National Pro Fastpitch league. She is an associate head coach at Stanford.

Abby Cole, Grand Haven

This basketball star led the Buccaneers to back-to-back Class A state championships and a 77-2 record. As a senior she was Class A Player of the Year and a Miss Basketball finalist. But volleyball was her future. She was a high school All-American and Miss Volleyball runner-up before playing at Michigan and becoming a three-time All-Big Ten and All-American selection.

Sally Sessions, North Muskegon

This American golfer starred on the links, finishing runner-up at the 1947 U.S. Women’s Open. She was one of the 13 founders of the LPGA in 1950. She is in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame and World Golf Hall of Fame.

Carrie Snikkers, Hudsonville

This Hudsonville Unity Christian multi-sport star was Class B Basketball Player of the Year. She earned a scholarship to play at Oakland but transferred closer to home where she led Hope College to the NCAA Division III title game in 2010. She was named National Player of the Year and was a three-time All-American.

Sara Driesenga, Hudsonville

This Hudsonville softball star was named Miss Softball in 2011 before pitching at Michigan, where she was part of three Women’s College World Series participants, including a national runner-up finish in 2015. She went on to play professionally and coaches at Wichita State.

Claire Tuttle, Hudsonville

The Hudsonville star swimmer won four individual state championships, was a two-time Division 1 Swimmer of the Year and was a nine-time All-American. She was also a two-time Michigan Water Polo Player of the Year and All-American, leading Hudsonville to three state championships and was part of the Junior Olympic Water Polo competition.

Allyssa DeHaan, Grandville

DeHaan was Miss Basketball of Michigan at Grandville. The 6-9 center was Big Ten Defensive plyer of the Year, four-time Big Ten All-Defensive and two-time All-Big Ten and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. She went on to play one year of volleyball at Grand Valley State as a graduate student.

Tia Brooks, Kentwood

Born in Saginaw, Brooks starred at East Kentwood. She won the state title in the shot put and threw at Oklahoma. She finished third at the 2012 Olympic Trials wo qualify for the London games, where she finished 19th.

Sekayi Bracey, Kentwood

The East Kentwood star won 10 individual state titles in track and field, including the 100 meters all four years and three titles each in the 200 meters and long jump. She went on to run at Purdue.

Heath Baldwin, Kalamazoo

Decathlon/track star. Was United States champion at Olympic Trials in 2024. Competed in 2024 Summer Olympics, finishing 10th. Attended Kalamazoo Hackett and competed for both University of Michigan and Michigan State University in track.

Tony McGee, Battle Creek

A 1967 graduate of Battle Creek Central. The only Battle Creek player ever to play in a Super Bowl and was a member of two Super Bowl teams with the Washington Redskins. Was an All-American at Bishop College in Texas and was picked in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.

Greg Jennings, Kalamazoo

A 2001 graduate of Kalamazoo Central, led Kalamazoo Central to its best season in 25 years at the time. Went to Western Michigan University, three 1,000-yard receiving seasons; MAC Offensive Player of the Year Award; Drafted by Green Bay Packers; Played in Super Bowl XLV.

Kenyon Murray, Battle Creek

A 1992 graduate of Battle Creek Central – The only basketball player in Battle Creek history to be named Mr. Basketball for the state. A high school All-American, went on to be a four-year starter at the University of Iowa, becoming the first player in that program to have over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200.

Derek Jeter, Kalamazoo

A 1992 Graduate of Kalamazoo Central – 14-time Major League All-Star; 5-tme World Series Champ. Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020. New York Yankees all-time career leader in hits, doubles, games played, stolen bases. In high school, was named Mr. Baseball for the state as senior; drafted sixth overall.

Wendy Ingraham, Battle Creek

A 1982 graduate of Lakeview. World-class triathlete. Ingraham was a six-time, top 10 finisher in the world-renowned Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. She was a team captain on the swim team at Michigan State University.

Lisa Larsen Rainsberger, Battle Creek

A 1979 graduate of Battle Creek Central. Lisa Larsen was an elite distance runner who became an All-American at the University of Michigan and made history by winning the Boston Marathon. Only American woman to win both the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon

Lindsay Tarpley, Portage

A 2002 graduate of Portage Central –A two-time Olympic gold medalist, winning gold at 2004 Athens Olympics, 2008 Beijing Olympics. In college, played for North Carolina, leading team to national championship and leading the country in points. Played professionally in United States and internationally.

Charlie Maxwell, Lawton

A 1944 graduate of Lawton High School and Western Michigan College of Education (now known as Western Michigan University). Known as Charlie “Paw Paw” Maxwell. Played 14 seasons in Major League Baseball. Two-time American League All-Star. Played for Detroit Tigers from 1955-60

Greg Barton, Homer

American sprint kayaker who became the first American ever to win an Olympic gold medal in kayaking, including in 1988 Seoul Olympics. Overall, won two gold medals and four world championship titles. Competed in three Summer Olympics, won four medals overall, including two bronze.

MALE

Charlie Gehringer, Fowlerville

Gehringer is the only Livingston County athlete in a major sports Hall of Fame, gaining induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1949. He played from 1924-42 for the Detroit Tigers, hitting .320 with 2,839 hits, 184 homers and 1,427 RBIs.

Drew Henson, Brighton

Henson is one of the rare athletes to play at the highest level in two major sports. He played eight games with the New York Yankees in 2002 and 2003 before playing quarterback in nine NFL games over the 2004 and 2008 seasons.

Adam Coon, Fowlerville

Coon qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling after winning the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for the second time. He was a four-time state champion at Fowlerville, a 2018 world silver medalist and a three-time All-American at Michigan.

Myles Amine, Brighton

Amine, who attended Detroit Catholic Central, qualified for the last two Summer Olympics as a freestyle wrestler representing San Marino. He won a bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Games. He was the first five-time All-American in NCAA history, getting an extra season because of COVID.

Zach Sieler, Pinckney

Sieler has had the longest NFL career of any Livingston County player, entering his ninth season in 2026. He was an unlikely candidate for a long career, playing at Ferris State and getting drafted in the seventh round. He had back-to-back 10-sack seasons for Miami in 2023 and 2024.

Bert Tooley, Howell

Tooley was the first major pro athlete from Livingston County, playing 196 games as a shortstop for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1911 and 1912. He was the last known living player to face Cy Young, dying in 1976.

Jake Vedder, Pinckney

Vedder is a two-time Olympian in snowboarding and, at age 28, could make a run at a third team in 2030. He finished sixth in snowboard cross in 2022 and 11th in 2026.

Riley Hough, Hartland

Hough is one of the greatest distance runners to come out of Michigan, winning the 2021 Eastbay national cross country championship after winning two state titles. He ran the second-fastest time by a Michigan runner with a blistering 14:10.6 in 2021 in Alabama.

Mark Messner, Hartland

Messner played for Hartland as a freshman before transferring to Detroit Catholic Central. He made four All-America teams as a defensive tackle at Michigan from 1985-88, twice on the third team and twice as a first-teamer. He played for the Los Angeles Rams in 1989.

Cullen Finnerty, Brighton

Finnerty was inducted posthumously into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. He won more games than any quarterback in college football at the time, going 51-4 at Grand Valley State from 2003-06. He led the Lakers to three NCAA Division II championships.

FEMALE

Avery Evenson, Hartland

Evenson was all-state 10 times in three sports at Hartland, sports that made her a perfect fit for triathlon. She had top-five finishes in two international triathlons before returning to cross country at the University of Michigan and making All-America in 2016 and 2018.

CeCe Thorington, Pinckney

Thorington was all-state in softball and track in the spring of 2024 and was a regional champion in cross country as a freshman. She set a state record by stealing 130 consecutive bases and currently plays at Michigan.

Shiann Darkangelo, Brighton

Darkangelo was still playing pro hockey at the age of 33 in 2025-26, winning a PWHL championship with Montreal. She won a gold medal for the U.S. at the 2016 World Championships. At Brighton, she was an all-state lacrosse player who scored the winning goal in the 2011 state final.

Pam Stanley, Brighton

The daughter of Detroit Tigers World Series hero Mickey Stanley, Pam was county Player of the Year in basketball in 1987 and volleyball in 1988, but softball was her main sport. She was a three-time All-American at Central Michigan, setting career records for runs (143), hits (255), average (.377) and steals (112).

Amber Berendowsky, Brighton

Berendowsky put up unfathomable numbers in two seasons of soccer at Brighton after transferring from Detroit Country Day, scoring 65 goals and 77 assists. She was Miss Soccer in 1996. At Michigan, she had 40 goals and 33 assists in 83 games from 1996-99.

Emerson Sargeant, Hartland

Sargeant helped Michigan State reach the Elite Eight in soccer last fall, scoring eight goals and three assists in 25 games. At Hartland, she was a key defender on a 2022 state runner-up basketball team and set the Livingston County 400-meter record of 56.76 seconds in the 2022 state meet.

Eliana Bommarito, Hartland

Bommarito was a trail blazer, becoming the first four-time state girls wrestling champion in Michigan. She won all 13 of her postseason matches with pins, the first 12 coming in the first 87 seconds. She went 21-6 against boys at 285 pounds as a senior in 2022.

Sabrina Nauss, Brighton

Nauss became the second Livingston County girl to win four state wrestling championships, going 22-0 against girls in postseason tournaments from 2021-24. She has been the NCAA runner-up her first two seasons at Grand Valley State. Nauss was a five-time Fargo national champ.

Debra Ochs, Howell

Ochs is the first Olympian and first medal winner from Livingston County. She won a bronze medal in archery in the team competition at the 1988 Summer Olympics. She won several national titles and a Pan-Am Games medal.

Sophie Daugard, Howell

Daugard became the first Livingston County girl to win a state track and field championship since 1998 when she captured shot put in 2023. She competes in heptathlon at Texas State, setting a school record. Daugard was an all-county basketball player who helped Howell win a district title as a senior.

MALE

Paul Krause, Flint

Krause, who won 14 letters in four sports at Bendle High School, set an NFL record with 81 career interceptions and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998. He played in four Super Bowls with the Minnesota Vikings. Krause was a three-time first-team All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection.

Andre Rison, Flint

Rison played wide receiver in the NFL for 12 seasons, catching 743 passes for 10,205 yards and 84 touchdowns. He was the point guard on Flint Northwestern’s back-to-back state championship teams in 1984 and 1985 and also excelled in track and field.

Rick Leach, Flint

Leach, a three-sport star at Flint Southwestern, was the starting quarterback at Michigan for four seasons. He made first-team All-America and was third in Heisman voting in 1978. He chose to play baseball, getting 1,719 major league at-bats from 1981-90.

Glen Rice, Flint

Rice is the greatest basketball player to come out of a city known for its hoops. He led Michigan to the 1989 NCAA championship, scoring a tournament-record 184 points and scoring a school-record 2,442 career points. Rice averaged 18.3 points during his 15-year NBA career. He led Flint Northwestern to state titles in 1984 and 1985.

Grant Fisher, Grand Blanc

Fisher made history in the 2024 Summer Olympics by winning bronze medals in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. He’s the first American to medal in both events. While at Grand Blanc, he was a two-time national cross country champ and the seventh high schooler to break a four-minute mile.

Chris Byrd, Flint

Byrd was a two-time world heavyweight boxing champion, beating undefeated Vitali Klitschko in 2000 for the WBO title and Evander Holyfield in 2002 for the IBF crown. He won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Tim Thomas, Davison

A late bloomer, Thomas didn’t make his NHL debut until he was 28. He made up for lost time, winning the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goalie in 2009 and 2011. He was the playoff MVP when he backstopped the Boston Bruins to the 2011 Stanley Cup. Thomas was a 2010 U.S. Olympian.

Mark Ingram, Grand Blanc/Flint

Ingram won the 2009 Heisman Trophy when he rushed for 1,658 yards and led Alabama to a national championship. He rushed for 8,111 yards and 65 touchdowns in 12 NFL seasons, making three Pro Bowls.

Ken Morrow, Davison

Morrow was a defenseman on the 1980 Miracle on Ice U.S. hockey team. He went from winning Olympic gold to the first of four straight Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders a few months later. He played 550 games in 10 NHL seasons.

Jim Abbott, Flint

Abbott pitched for 11 seasons in the majors. He threw a no-hitter as a Yankee in 1993 after finishing third in the Cy Young Award voting in 1991 for the Angels. Abbott won a gold medal in the 1988 Olympics and starred at Michigan. At Flint Central, he also won a football playoff game as a starting quarterback.

FEMALE

Claressa Shields, Flint

Shields won gold medals in boxing at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, becoming the first American boxer to win consecutive medals. She has held 18 world championships spanning five weight classes.

Deanna Nolan, Flint

Nolan is a five-time WNBA All-Star and three-time champion who is considered one of the greatest players in the league’s history. She was the MVP of the 2006 WNBA Finals. The 1996 Miss Basketball winner led Flint Northern to two state titles.

Pamela McGee, Flint

McGee became the first Flint basketball player to win an Olympic gold medal in 1984. Playing alongside twin sister Paula, she led Flint Northern to state championships in 1978 and 1979 and two NCAA titles at USC in 1983 and 1984. She was also the state shot put champion in 1979.

Geena Gall, Grand Blanc

Gall ran the 800 meters in the 2012 Olympics in London after placing second at the U.S. Trials in 1:59.24. She was a two-time NCAA champion in the 800 and a 10-time All-American at Michigan. Gall won the state 800 title in 2004 and 2005 at Grand Blanc.

Tonya Edwards, Flint

Edwards scored 2,307 career points, then a state record, at Flint Northwestern from 1982-85. She led the Wildcats to two state basketball titles as player and one as a coach. Edwards won two national titles at Tennessee in 1987 and 1989 and played 125 WNBA games.

Stacey Thomas, Flint

Thomas set the Big Ten record for career steals with 372 while playing at Michigan from 1997-2000. She played six seasons in the WNBA, winning the 2003 championship with the Detroit Shock. She was a three-time state high jump champion at Flint Southwestern.

Ellen Tomek, Flushing

Tomek is the first athlete from the Flint area to compete in three Olympics, doing so as a rower in 2008, 2016 and 2021. She picked up the sport at the University of Michigan after being a backup on Flint Powers Catholic’s 2000 and 2001 state championship basketball teams.

Gwen Wentland, Grand Blanc

Wentland is the only high school girl in Michigan to clear 6 feet in high jump, doing so in 1990. She was the state Class A champion in 1990. Wentland was an All-American at Kansas State who competed in five U.S. Olympic Trials from 1992-2008.

Sophia Kurys, Flint

Kurys was called the Ty Cobb of the American Girls Baseball League, stealing more than 1,000 bases in eight seasons. She was the league’s MVP in 1946 when she stole 201 bases and scored 117 runs.

MALE

Todd Williams, Monroe

Won six state titles in track and cross country at Monroe High, then became an eight-time All-American at Tennessee. Ran the 10,000 meters for the United States in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.

Bill Laskey, Milan

Linebacker played in Super Bowl II with the Oakland Raiders after standout careers at Milan High School (graduated in 1961) and the University of Michigan. An NFL Pro Bowler in 1965 with Buffalo and played 119 games for the Raiders, Colts and Broncos.

Bronco McKart, Monroe

The Monroe native compiled a 56-11-1 record with 34 knockouts in professional boxing. He won the World Boxing Organization light middleweight title in 1996.

Rosie Barnes, Monroe

Still holds the Monroe High record with 1,248 career points. Went on to star at Bowling Green and was drafted by the Houston Rockets in 1980.

Dave Steffen, Flat Rock

A dominant lineman who led Flat Rock to a state championship in 1976, the first year of the playoffs. Also a state championship wrestler, he played minor league baseball for the Detroit Tigers and later became USSSA Hall of Famer in softball.

Willie Jones, Monroe

His 10.6 clocking in the 100 meters in 1963 still stands as the Monroe County Region record. Also starred in basketball and football in high school and played college football at the University of Montana.

Jackson Lamb, Monroe

Three-time Monroe County Player of the Year in basketball and two-time winner in baseball. Accepted a baseball scholarship at The University of Michigan, where he was All-Big Ten in 2017. Drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2013 and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016.

Fred Gladding, Flat Rock

Capped an outstanding career at Flat Rock by going 10-1 with 148 strikeouts in 86.67 innings as a senior in 1955. Played 13 seasons in the majors, leading the National League with 29 saves in 1969.

Joey Wiemer Temperance

Stood out in football, basketball and baseball for Bedford High School. Drafted in the fourth round by the Milwaukee Brewers out of the University of Cincinnati in 2020. Has played for Cincinnati, Miami and Washington. Tied an MLB record by reaching base in 10 straight plate appearances this season.

Bryce Windham, Monroe

Starred in football, basketball and baseball at St. Mary Catholic Central leading the Falcons to a state championship in football and being named state player of the year in both football and basketball. Made it to Triple A in the Chicago Cubs system before retiring from baseball.

FEMALE

Shelley Looney, Gibraltar

A basketball and softball standout at Gibraltar Carlson who scored the game-winning goal for the United States women’s hockey in the gold-medal game against Canada in the 1988 winter Olympics. Also won a silver medal in 2002.

Meghan Beaubien, Monroe

Led St. Mary Catholic Central to three straight softball state championships from 2015-17 compiling a 100-11 career record with 1,442 strikeouts and a 0.28 ERA. Named Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year three times. Went on to star at the University of Michigan where she was the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year in 2018.

Kiara Kudron, New Boston

Three-time Monroe County Region Girls Basketball Player of the Year at New Boston Huron, setting a school record with 1,630 career points. Went on to play four years at Gonzaga and three seasons professionally in Europe.

Victoria Gray, Monroe

Won Monroe County Region Player of the Year honors four times, three in basketball and once in volleyball. Currently playing volleyball at Indiana.

Tara Breske, Temperance

Won Monroe County Region Player of the Year in both basketball and volleyball during her career at Bedford. Went on to play four seasons at Bowling Green, scoring 916 points.

Melissa Taylor, Summerfield

Summerfield graduate who was the Monroe County Region Player of the Year in both basketball and softball. Named Michigan’s Miss Softball in 1997. Carried a career batting average of .611 in high school and was named Big Ten Player of the Year for the University of Michigan.

Michelle Bolster, Summerfield

The 1988 Big Ten Softball Player of the Year for the University of Michigan led Summerfield to a state championship in 1984. Went play professionally for the Raybestos Brakettes and served as head coach at Nevada, Indiana and Bowling Greer.

Leigh Ross, Whiteford

A three-sport athlete at Whiteford who went on to set softball records at the University of Toledo for career batting average, hits, stolen bases and total bases, earning a spot in the school’s Hall of Fame. Served as head softball coach at Bowling Green and Syracuse and worked as a softball commentator for ESPN.

Ellie Sieler, Monroe

Ended her softball career at Monroe High on a 79-game hitting streak, the second-longest in state history. Carried a career average of .301 in four seasons at the University of Michigan, earning All-Big Ten honors in 2024.

Lauri LaBeau, New Boston

Monroe County Region Girls Basketball Player of the Year in 1987 and 1988 for New Boston Huron, where she also was a softball star. Played on a national championship basketball team at Alma where she was named Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four.

MALE

Jack Campbell, Port Huron

The Port Huron Northern graduate played nine NHL seasons between 2013 and 2024. The goaltender’s 176 career games were split between the Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers. He was named an All-Star in 2022.

Mark Chapman, Port Huron

The Port Huron High School graduate played five seasons of FBS football at Central Michigan University from 2013 to 2017. In his final season, 2017, Chapman led the team in receptions (59) and receiving yards (875). Though he never played in the league, Chapman was also the No. 1. overall pick of the 2018 CFL draft.

Jake Cronenworth, St. Clair

A two-time MLB All-Star, the infielder is in his seventh season with the San Diego Padres. Cronenworth also helped the St. Clair High School baseball team win the 2011 MHSAA Division 2 state championship.

Jim Gosger, Port Huron

No athlete from Port Huron has ever had more run-ins with MLB history than Gosger, from St. Stephen, who played 10 major-league seasons (705 career games) between 1963 and 1974. He was the last batter to face Satchel Paige, played for the infamous Seattle Pilots, the 1969 New York Mets and was on the losing end of Denny McLain’s 30th win. Gosger also won a National League pennant with the 1973 Mets. A horse named after him even finished second in the Preakness Stakes in 2025. Gosger, now 83, still lives in Port Huron.

Tyler Jamison, Port Huron

The Port Huron Northern forward is entering his senior year on the Lake Superior State University men’s basketball team. Prior to playing at the NCAA Division II level, he spent one season in Division I with Fairleigh Dickinson. In 2023, he won the Hal Schram Mr. Basketball Award, which recognizes the top high school player in Michigan. Jamison remains the only winner from St. Clair County in the award’s 46-year history.

Brendon Kay, Marine City

The quarterback played five seasons of FBS football at the University of Cincinnati from 2009 to 2013. Kay’s best year was in 2013, when he threw for 3,302 yards and 22 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. In 2007, he led the Marine City High School football team to an upset victory over Detroit Country Day in the MHSAA Division 4 state championship game.

Tim Lelito, St. Clair

The offensive tackle spent five seasons in the NFL from 2013 and 2017. Lelito’s 65 career games were split between the New Orleans Saints and the Detroit Lions. He played NCAA Division II football at Grand Valley State University.

Braiden McGregor, Port Huron

The defensive end is entering his third season with the New York Jets. On Sept. 9, 2024, McGregor became just the second Port Huron native to play in an NFL game, and the first since 1933. He spent four seasons (2020-23) with the University of Michigan football program and was part of its 2023 national championship team.

Tyler Motte, St. Clair

The forward played nine seasons in the NHL between 2016 and 2025. Motte’s 455 career games were split between the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings.

FEMALE

Ali Bastianelli, Marysville

Having played for one of Michigan’s most decorated high school volleyball programs, Bastianelli extended her career far beyond the prep level. The middle blocker spent four seasons (totaling 488 sets and 135 matches) with the University of Illinois women’s team from 2015 to 2018. During her senior year in 2018, Bastianelli was an AVCA All-America Third-Team selection and received All-Big Ten First-Team honors. She also finished as Illinois’ all-time leader in both career blocks and block assists. Bastianelli currently plays professionally for Major League Volleyball’s Grand Rapid Rise.

Akilah Collier, Port Huron

The guard played four seasons of NCAA Division I women’s basketball at Michigan State University from 1993 to 1997. After her final collegiate game in 1997, longtime Port Huron Times Herald sportswriter Brian Marshall wrote, “Collier left PH as perhaps the best female player to ever don the red and white.” In 1993, Collier’s senior year of high school, she was named to The Associated Press all-state team for Class A.

Sadie Dykstra, Yale

Fresh off a legendary high school career, Dykstra is entering her freshman year with the University of Michigan women’s track & field team. During her four years at Yale High School, was not only one of Michigan’s top track & field athletes, but one of its best girls basketball players as well.

Hannah Jones, Port Huron

Played four seasons (73 games) with the Michigan State University women’s soccer team from 2016 to 2019. While in high school, Jones was a two-time Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year award winner (2014-15, 2015-16) at Port Huron Northern.

Rachel Kehoe, St. Clair

The center began a decade-long, professional basketball career overseas in 2017 with Spain’s Unio Esportiva Mataró. Prior to turning pro, Kehoe played two seasons each at Eastern Michigan University and St. Clair County Community College.

Sage Kellerman, Croswell

Kellerman just finished her fourth and final season with the Michigan State University women’s gymnastics team. As a junior in 2025, she helped the Spartans reach the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1988. That same year, Kellerman clinched a runner-up finish on the vault, the highest-ever for a Michigan State gymnast at the championships.

Milargo “Milli” Martinez, Imlay City

Martinez played four seasons (116 games) of Division I women’s basketball at Georgia Tech from 1998 to 2002. During the 2001-02 season, the guard was named to the All-ACC Team as well as the All-ACC Defensive Team. In high school, she starred in both basketball and softball. More than 25 years after Martinez graduated high school, she remains one of the greatest, multi-sport athletes the Blue Water Area has ever seen.

Kristi Miller-North, Marysville

The former professional tennis player rewrote the record books during her four collegiate seasons at Georgia Tech from 2004 to 2008. Miller-North won more matches in singles (152) and doubles (110) than any other player in program history. In 2005, she became the school’s first-ever female All-American. Two years later, Miller-North helped the Yellowjackets win the NCAA Division I national championship. In 2018, she was inducted in the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame.

Ella Stephenson, Algonac

The outfielder recently finished her junior season with the University of Michigan softball team. In Stephenson’s first three seasons, she started 172 of 175 career games. In 2023, while a senior in high school, she was an MHSAA Division 3 all-state first team.

Taylor Waslyk, Port Huron

One of the most decorated hockey players — male or female — to ever come out of Port Huron, Waslyk played four seasons (145 games) at Boston College from 2010 to 2014. In 2012, she was part of the United State women’s national team at the IIHF Women’s World Championship. Waslyk also coached the Lindenwood University team for three seasons until 2026.

MALE

Draymond Green, Saginaw

One of the greatest defensive players in NBA history, the Saginaw High School and Michigan State alum is a four-time NBA Champion, a nine-time NBA All-Defense selection (five first team, four second team) and was the 2017 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Hazen Shirley “Kiki” Cuyler, Harrisville

A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Cuyler helped Pittsburgh win the 1925 World Series as his two-run double in the eighth inning of Game 7 scored the deciding runs in the Pirates’ victory. Cuyler had a lifetime batting average of .321, totaling 2,299 hits and 128 home runs. He led the National League in stolen bases four times (1926, 1928-1930).

Bill Hewitt, Bay City Central

One of the top NFL players in the 1930s. Hewitt won two NFL Championships and was named All-Pro six times, a first-teamer four times. He was named to the NFL’s 1930s all-decade team and was listed No. 16 on a list of the greatest Chicago Bears of all time by the franchise.

Terry McDaniel, Saginaw

McDaniel was the No. 9 overall pick in the 1988 NFL Draft, playing 11 seasons for the Raiders and Seahawks. He was a five-time pro bowler and made the 1993 All-Pro First Team. He also won multiple track state championships in high school.

Charles Rogers, Saginaw

Rogers was one of Michigan’s most decorated high school athletes when he left Saginaw High in 2000; he was a four-time state champion in track and field, led the football team to a state title in 1999 and was a five-star overall recruit. At MSU, he won the Biletnikoff and Warfield Awards in 2002 as the top college receiver, was a unanimous All-American and eventually was drafted No. 2 overall by the Detroit Lions.

Lamarr Woodley, Saginaw

Woodley was a five-star recruit at Saginaw High School, was an All-American linebacker for the University of Michigan and spent nine seasons in the NFL, helping the Pittsburgh Steelers win Super Bowl XLIII in 2009.

Jason Richardson, Saginaw Arthur

Another MSU basketball alum, Richardson spent 14 seasons in the NBA and won back-to-back Slam Dunk Contests in 2002 and 2003.

Dan Pohl, Mount Pleasant

A star baseball and basketball player at Mount Pleasant High School, Pohl went on to have a successful golf career in the PGA, finishing second at the Masters in 1982 and totaling 70 top ten finishes. In 1987, he won the Vardon Trophy with the lowest average score and was part of the US Ryder Cup team.

George “Kid” Lavinge, Bay City

Known as the Saginaw Kid, Kid Lavigne was named boxing’s first World Lightweight Champion in 1896. He was undefeated over his first 54 career fights (32 wins, 11 draws, 10 no decisions and 1 no contest). He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1998.

FEMALE

Kristen Hixson, Remus

The former state champion at Chippewa Hills went on to break NCAA records in the pole vault at Grand Valley State, earning multiple national championships. She has competed in multiple U.S. national events and the Olympic Trials, finishing as high as fifth where she make the national team and took the gold medal at the North American Central American Caribbean Games.

Victoria Jankoska, Freeland

2013 Miss Basketball winner and Michigan State’s all time leader in points, field goals and three-pointers made. Jankoska was the No. 9 pick in 2017 WNBA Draft.

Erinn Reed, Saginaw

A four-time all-state selection and a three-time Parade All-American, Reed still holds spots in the MHSAA records books for points in a career (2,185) and in a season (709, 28.3 points per game). She won Miss Basketball in 1992 and was the No. 1 rated guard in the country, playing college basketball at Iowa and Kansas.

Bethany Brewster, Saginaw Valley Lutheran

Still the Lower Peninsula Class C record holder in the 3,200-meter run (11 minutes, 7.69 seconds), Brewster went on to have a successful career at the University of Wisconsin. She was a four-time All-Big Ten selection in cross country and won the Big Ten Cross Country Championship in 2001, earning Athlete of the Year honors as well.

Cheyenne Nesbitt, Essexville Garber

One of the top athletes in Saginaw Valley State history; Nesbitt won 11 Division II national championships from 2021 to 2024 including four consecutive Heptathlon championships. She won the 2024 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the women’s pentathlon.

Kelly Robbins, Mount Pleasant

Robbins, another top-tier golfer from Mount Pleasant, shot three of the lowest scores in MHSAA history in her time at MPHS, going on to win an NCAA Championship at Tulsa before joining the LPGA Tour. She won nine total tournaments, including one major, the 1995 LPGA Championship.

Vicki Krapohl, Mount Pleasant

Krapohl was the 1999-2000 Miss Basketball winner after averaging 23.6 points and 5.6 assists as a senior. She went onto have a successful career at Duke, finishing with the third best three-point percentage (42.4) in ACC history.

Reyna Frost, Reese

An MHSAA All-time leader in points and blocked shots and a two-time all-state selection for Reese, Reyna Frost had a successful career at Central Michigan, finishing her final season as the MAC Player of the Year and an AP All-America Honorable Mention.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN REGION

MALE

Jay Smith, Mio

For more than 45 years, the state’s leading scorer in boys basketball has been Smith. He starred at Mio-Au Sable High School, finishing his career with 2,841 points. The 1979 Michigan Mr. Basketball, Smith also set the record for points in a single season with 952, which now ranks fourth. He played at Saginaw Valley and Bowling Green and has had coaching stops at Grand Valley, Central Michigan, Michigan, Eastern Michigan and currently LSU.

Bob Carey, Charlevoix

While you have to go way back for Carey, his 6-foot-5, 219-pound frame and toughness would match anyone today. Carey was a Rayder football, basketball and track and field star and competed in all three at Michigan State, where he earned nine letters and was a 1950 and 1951 All-American football player. He was a first round pick of the 1952 Los Angeles Rams.

Dan Majerle, Traverse City

A dominant player at Traverse City High, he finished his career averaging 37 points a game as a senior in 1982-83. His 926 points that season are fifth all-time still. He went on to star at Central Michigan, averaging 21.8 points and 8.9 rebounds for his career. Majerle was later the 14th overall selection in the NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns and played 14 years in the NBA, becoming an All-Star and Sixth Man of the Year.

Ryan Hayes, Traverse City (West)

A dominant three-sport star at Traverse City West and 2018 graduate, he signed with the University of Michigan after an all-state career as a tight end and offensive linemen. He was also the Big North player of the year in basketball and held a career ERA as a pitcher of 1.07 in 176 innings. Started all 14 games as a senior at Michigan and has played in the NFL for five years, currently with the Tennessee Titans.

Anthony Zettel, West Branch (Ogemaw Heights)

Zettel was a mountain of a player at Ogemaw Heights in football as an all-state defensive lineman. He also lettered in baseball, basketball and track as a senior in 2010. He set a then Division 2 record with a throw of 61-feet, 8-inches in the shot. He signed with Penn State for football and played six years in the NFL, including two with the Detroit Lions.

Dwain Koscielniak, Gaylord (St. Mary)

Koscielniak made his presence felt in football and baseball as a Snowbird from 1987 to 1990. In football, he rushed for 5,078 yards in his career and twice earned all-state. He rushed for a state record 529 yards against Pellston in his final game. In baseball, he ranks seventh in career homers (35), seventh in season homers (17) and seventh in season average (.629). He went on to play baseball at MSU and spent two years in the minors.

Ryan Shay, Central Lake

A Notre Dame All-American, Shay claimed four consecutive state championships in cross country from 1993 to 1996 at Central Lake. He also earned seven total state championships in track and field. Following Notre Dame, Shay tragically died during the 2007 Olympic Marathon Trials in New York City, collapsing from an undiagnosed heart condition.

Joey Garber, Petoskey

A two-time Michigan Mr. Golf recipient and 2010 Division 2 state champion as a senior at Petoskey, Garber went on to the University of Michigan, then Georgia, where he became an NCAA All-American. He later competed on the Web.com and Korn Ferry Tour, before earning his PGA Tour card.

Hunter Jones, Thompsonville (Benzie Central)

Jones was as dominant as a runner can be in the state, winning four consecutive state championships in cross country and six total state titles in track and field from 2019 to 2022. He was named the Michigan Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year and 2022 Michigan Athlete of the Year. He owns the second-best cross-country time ever in the state (14:46.5) regardless of class. He currently runs at Wake Forest.

Dominic LaJoie, Gaylord

You don’t have to be big to be a dominant athlete and Lajoie proved it. A three-time state champion wrestler at 103, 112 and 125 pounds; he was also a state-runner up at 119 pounds. Finished 52-0 as a senior in 2018 and ended his career 200-4 overall and has the most tech-fall wins (94) all time. He went on to wrestle at Cornell and Stanford.

FEMALE

Alisha Glass, Leland

A four-time first team all-state volleyball player at Leland that led the Comets to a state title as a senior in 2006. Named Miss Volleyball in the state, she holds national records for season aces (296), career aces (937) and career kills (3,584). Glass went on to an All-American career at Penn State and later competed with the U.S. National team from 2009 to 2016, including the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Jasmine Hines, Central Lake

A Parade High School All-American and 2011 Miss Basketball and Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year. Holds the Michigan points record with 3,034 and rebounds (1,692) record. Four-time first team all-state, went on to an All-Big Ten career at Michigan State. Also a three-time shot put state champion in track and all-state volleyball player.

Sami Michell, Reed City

Michell was a 12-time state champion in her years at Reed City from 2010 to 2013. She earned four straight state titles in the 100 hurdles, then three straight in the 300 hurdles, to go with title in the long jump and 200 meter dash. She also owns the Division 3 100 hurdles (13.84), 300 hurdles (42.23) and long jump (18-6.5) state records. She went on to run at the University of Michigan.

Marissa Treece, Maple City Glen Lake

Earned 10 varsity letters in her time at Glen Lake in track, cross country and basketball. Claimed seven track state championships between 2004 and 2007 and three consecutive cross country state titles from 2004 to 2006. Owns the 1,600-meter Division 4 state record in 4:51.73. Went on to run at Notre Dame.

Aubrey Jones, Gaylord

Led Gaylord to two state championships before graduating in 2025. Led the entire nation in home runs in 2024 with 26 and was named the 2025 Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year and first team high school All-American. Hit 71 home runs in her career, second best all-time. Signed with Oklahoma State as the nation’s No. 9 ranked player.

Jayden Jones, Gaylord

Earned the 2024 Michigan Miss Softball Award and was a third team All-American by NFCA. Finished her career with a .498 average and 48 home runs. Named one of the top recruits in the country and No. 4 middle infielder in the nation as a senior. Went on to sign with Virginia Tech, before transferring to Oklahoma State to compete with her sister, Aubrey.

Kelly Smith, Petoskey

Between 1991 and 1993, Smith earned seven state championships in track and field while competing in the 800-, 1,600-and 1,600-meter relay. She swept the 800 and 1,600 at the Class A level for three straight years and set Class B records in the 800 (2:12.19) and 1,600 (4:48.41) in 1994. In cross country, she also earned titles in 1990, 1992 and 1993, before running at the University of Colorado.

Anika Dy, Traverse City (West)

Dy was a four-time all-state golfer at TC West and a three-time Michigan Miss Golf recipient from 2016 to 2018. Also claimed three state championships in Division 1, winning in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Was a 2015 state runner-up. Won Michigan PGA Women’s Open at age 17 and went on to compete at Michigan.

Rylie Bisballe, Lake City

Earned multiple all-state basketball honors at Lake City. Went on to star as a center and lead Grand Valley State to the NCAA Championship where she was a first-team All-American and NCAA tournament MVP.

Libby Munoz, Leland

The MHSAA career record holder for goals in a career with 228, Munoz shined at Leland from 2013 to 2016 and has 12 different accomplishments in the record books. She’s also No. 1 all-time for career points with 298 scored 50 or more goals three times in her career. She went on to an all-conference career at Kalamazoo College. 

Kaila Kuhn, Boyne City

Kuhn is a Boyne City native that spent much of her high school career training out West before earning her spot in both the Beijing and Milano Cortina Winter Olympic games for freestyle aerial skiing. In 2021, she graduated from Boyne City after taking online classes and returned to walk with her class. She earned a gold medal in the 2026 Olympics.

UPPER PENINSULA REGION

MALE

George Gipp, Laurium

Known as the “Gipper” from the famous Ronald Reagan film in the 1930s, Gipp was Notre Dame first all-American in 1920 under Knute Rockne. He scored 83 touchdowns in 32 games with the Fighting Irish.

Nick Baumgartner, Iron River

At 40 years old, Baumgartner captured a gold medal in the mixed team snowboard cross at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. He also qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympics and earned a gold and silver medal at the 2010 and 2011 Winter X-Games.

Mike DellAngelo, Ishpeming

Led Ishpeming to its first-ever football state championship by beating Hudson – who was on a 72-game winning streak heading into the title game – in the first year of the MHSAA playoffs in 1975. After rushing for 4,267 yards in three years as a tailback at Ishpeming, he later played football at Northern Michigan University.

Steve Mariucci, Iron Mountain

An Iron Mountain native along with legendary Michigan State University men’s basketball coach Tim Izzo, Mariucci led Northern Michigan University to its only national football title in 1975. Mariucci went on to be an NFL head coach with San Francisco and Detroit.

Kevin Tapani, Escanaba

The Escanaba native went on to play 13 years in MLB and was a starting pitcher for the Minnesota Twins during their 1991 World Series triumph. He also spent time with the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago White Sox.

Todd Lindeman, Felch

Standing close to 7-foot tall, Lindeman was a basketball standout at North Dickinson before playing four years for Bobby Knight at Indiana in the 1990s. Following IU, Lindeman played basketball in the CBA and overseas.

Jeff Finger, Houghton

After playing at St. Cloud State University during his college hockey career, Finger was a defenseman with the Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL, scoring 17 goals during his career from 2003-2012.

Clarence John “Taffy” Abel, Sault Ste. Marie

Hailing from Sault Ste. Marie, Abel had stints with the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers in the late 1920s and early 1930s. In 1924, he was a silver medalist for Team USA hockey in the 1924 Winter Olympics in France.

Tom Izzo, Iron Mountain

At Northern Michigan University, where he was roommates with best friend and future NFL head coach Steve Mariucci, Izzo was a NCAA Division 2 all-American with Northern Michigan University men’s basketball in 1977. After his basketball playing days, Izzo went on to build a powerhouse and become a Hall of Fame head coach with MSU men’s basketball.

Bob Mariucci, Iron Mountain

A four-time Upper Peninsula state wrestling champion from 1981-84, Mariucci is the only U.P. wrestler to earn USA Scholastic all-American dream team honors like he did in 1983. Mariucci went on to wrestle and play football at Northern Michigan University.

FEMALE

Nicole Kamin, Escanaba

This elite guard starred in high school before exploding at Grand Valley State University, leading the Lakers to back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships. She was named GLIAC Tournament Player of the Year and all-region multiple times.

Sarah Stream, Ishpeming

While she was plagued by injuries, Stream was a basketball star at Westwood High School, leading the Patriots to a state title in 2003. As a player at Michigan Tech, Steam helped lead the Huskies to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight twice during her career (126 games).

Krista Clement, St. Ignace

The first U.P. girl to ever be named Miss Basketball in Michigan, Clement tallied 2,060 career points, earned a Class C state title (2000) and runner-up (2002) with St. Ignace, and was a four-year captain of the University of Michigan women’s basketball team.

Becky Iverson, Escanaba

Iverson played on the LGPA Tour, where she won the 1995 Friendly’s Classic — her first Tour win. Prior to the LPGA, Iverson played four years of collegiate golf at MSU.

Erica Ledy, DeTour

A women’s basketball standout at DeTour High School, Ledy was named to the Detroit Free Press Team of the Decade for the 1980s. Following her high school career, Ledy went on to become a four-year team captain and standout with Lake Superior State.

Nicole Elmblad, St. Ignace

A superstar basketball player for St. Ignace Elmblad helped lead the Saints to a 73-5 record during her sophomore, junior and senior seasons, with her senior year resulting in a Class C state title in 2011. Unanimously voted as the U.P. Class A-B-C Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011, Elmblad went on to play basketball at the University of Michigan.

Marion “Mingo” Anderson, Marquette

One of the greatest all-around athletes in U.P. history, Anderson was a star pitcher for the Mehrmann Plumberettes fast-pitch softball team, which won Class C state titles in 1951 in 1952. Anderson was also a three-time U.P. Open singles champion in tennis and won U.P. singles bowling championships in 1951 and 1964.

Jill Wettuhn Beaudo, Carney

An all-time U.P. women’s basketball great, Beaudo led Carney-Nadeau High School to an 81-1 record in three seasons, winning state championships in 1989 and 1990 and compiling an incredible 78-game winning streak. After scoring 1,577 career points during her career with the Wolves, Beaudo netted 1,248 career points at Lake Superior State.

LENAWEE COUNTY REGION

MALE

Dorne Dibble, Adrian

A football star, Dibble played at Michigan State and was an All-American at defensive end. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1951 and converted to receiver. He caught a then-record six touchdown passes as a rookie. After a year in the military, he helped the Lions to NFL Championships in 1953 and 1957. He scored 19 career touchdowns.

Kellen Davis, Adrian

A top tight end in high school for the Maples, Davis played college football at Michigan State, starting 22 games. He was honorable mention All-Big Ten as a senior when he caught 60 passes for 789 yards and nine touchdowns. He was drafted by the Bears in 2008 and played in the NFL until 2016, earning a Super Bowl title with Seattle along the way.

Jordan Richard-Snodgrass, Tecumseh

A professional bowler, she has won seven PWBA tour titles so far. She was the 2023 PWBA Player of the Year. She won the gold medal at the Pan American games and the World Bowling Championships. She has eight international gold medals and was a three-time All-American at Arkansas State.

Duane Below, Britton

The Britton-Macon Area baseball player was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2006. He reached the major leagues in 2011. He played two more seasons in the majors before playing in Korea.

William Reid, Adrian

Was an all-state basketball player, then led Adrian to the state championship as a coach in 1912. Went on to play at Colgate and served in World War I. He was the vice president of the NCAA from 1942-26 and was credited with helping shape the sport’s early structure, leading to his election to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1963.

Mike Marshall, Adrian

A pitcher for Adrian High School, Marshall went on to play for Michigan State. He was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1960. He reached the majors in 1967 with the Detroit Tigers. He won the National League Cy Young award with the Dodgers in 1974. The relief pitcher was a two-time All-Star, pitching until 1981 and leading the league in saves three times.

Jaxon Salenbien, Lenawee Christian

Holds the county scoring record in basketball with 2,128 points. He was Division 4 Player of the Year in 2026.

FEMALE

Alli Zajac, Tecumseh

A Miss Basketball finalist, she led Tecumseh to another deep tournament run before committing to play at Eastern Michigan.

Aubrey Lauer, Clinton

Scored a stunning 229 career soccer goals to become the Michigan all-time leading scorer. She also holds the single-season goals record with 75.

Emmry Ross, Onstead

A dominant distance runner, Ross won 10 individual high school state championships. She won at least one title in the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 events. She also won an indoor national title in the 800 meters.

Melissa Stahl (Wyman), Deerfield

Scored a stunning 2,254 career points from 1987-91 and still holds the career basketball scoring record in the county.

Bree Salenbien, Lenawee Christian

The Gatorade Player of the Year, she led the team to back-to-back state championships and scored 2,059 career points. She went on to play basketball at Gonzaga.

Kristy (Maska) Zajac, Tecumseh

A scoring machine in the 1990s, Zajac ranks third all time in the county in scoring with 1,871 points. She came back to coach the team.

Ella Salenbien, Adrian

A 16-time letter winner, she set a multitude of school records in several sports. She played basketball, soccer, volleyball and swimming, where she became a state champion as a freshman. She went on to swim at Hope College.

STURGIS REGION

MALE

Chance Stewart, Sturgis

Stewart starred for four years as quarterback at Hillsdale College, winning the G-MAC Player of the Year as a senior and being nominated as a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy as well. Stewart still sits atop the Hillsdale records for passing yards (10,064) and touchdowns (73) and is currently the head football coach for the Sturgis Trojans.

Dylan Targgart, Coldwater

Targgart earned multiple nods as a First Team Academic All-American while at South Carolina. He earned four First Team All-America honors for track and field as well while a member of the Gamecocks. Targgart also nearly made the U.S. Olympic team for the shot put.

Matt Thornton, Centreville

A Centreville graduate, Thornton pitched for the Red Sox, White Sox, Yankees, Nationals, Padres and Mariners in his career, which spanned more than a decade in the Major Leagues. Thornton was an All-Star in 2010 and always a crafty lefty coming out of the bullpen.

Troy Niblock, White Pigeon

A standout in multiple sports for White Pigeon, Niblock went on to earn All-American honors at Adrian College on the football field. He was named MIAA Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2007 and 2008.

FEMALE

Rachel Anderson, Sturgis

An Under Armour All-American in high school, Anderson played four years at Division I Western Kentucky and was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year and was a First Teamer her final three years. Anderson went on to try out with the USA National Team for the Olympics and earned All-America status before playing professionally in Germany.

Kali Heivilin, Three Rivers

Heivilin was named Gatorade Player of the Year following her senior year at Three Rivers, posting an impressive amount of records on the diamond. She went on to play four years at the University of Alabama, earning Second Team All-SEC honors as a senior before signing a professional contract to play softball for the Florida Vibe.

Keyanna O’Tey, Sturgis

O’Tey, a five-time MHSAA state title winner at Sturgis who owns four Wolverine Conference records, four SHS records and won a dozen conference titles while a Trojan, is now setting records in college. O’Tey set a new school record at the University of Michigan in the 200-meter dash and is also part of the 400 relay team for the Wolverines, which set a school record this past year.
