U.P. man found dead after missing person report. What happened

The body of a missing Manistique man was found Tuesday, May 26, near the Manistique East Breakwater lighthouse, the Michigan State Police said.

Officials, who had not released the name of the man as of Thursday afternoon, said in a release that the preliminary investigation indicates no signs of foul play, but the investigation remains ongoing.

Police closed the lighthouse, located at the shoreline of Lake Michigan in Schoolcraft County after a person called MSP, requesting troopers to open a missing person investigation.

“There were no apparent signs of suspicious circumstances, and it was unclear where the 39-year-old man may have gone or why he was missing. Troopers attempted to locate the subject, however, were initially unsuccessful,” the MSP said.

On Wednesday, troopers searched near the lighthouse and a nearby park, and located items that were confirmed to have belonged to the missing man.

“The MSP Marine Services Team was contacted and responded to search the nearby water. After searching late into the night on May 27, 2026, MSP divers located the missing man deceased in the water,” MSP said.

His family has since been notified.

MSP Manistique troopers were assisted by the MSP Marine Services Team, Manistique Public Safety Department, MSP Eighth District Detective Bureau, and MSP Negaunee Regional Communications Center.
