Tigers swept in Chicago, fail to protect late lead again

Chicago — We’d say that one will leave a mark.

But, really, when you’ve spent an entire month getting beaten up every which way, who will even notice?

Despite excellent pitching from Keider Montero and another early lead, the Tigers were swept out of Chicago with a 2-1 loss to the White Sox on Sunday at Rate Field. The crowd of 28,764 chanted, “Detroit Sucks!” in the late innings, and, well, who can argue that right now?

The Tigers fell to 22-38 on the season, 16 games under .500 for the first time since 2022. They’ve lost 21 of 25. They were 6-22 in the month of May.

Montero went six dazzling innings, allowing just two hit and no walks while striking out four. He needed just 65 pitches to get through the six innings.

But Tigers manager AJ Hinch went with Drew Anderson and his change-up for the seventh inning, with a string of left-handed hitters due up for the White Sox. It backfired. Anderson gave up a tying home run to the second hitter he faced, Colson Montgomery, and then he allowed three consecutive singles, Tristan Peters’ bringing in the go-ahead (and eventually winning) run.

To repeat. Montero allowed two hits in six innings. Anderson (3-2) allowed four hits to his first five batters. It was a tough weekend for Anderson, who gave up the walk-off home run to Miguel Vargas on Friday night.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out single by Kevin McGonigle, followed by a double to left by Spencer Torkelson. That was all their offense against five White Sox pitchers. Bryson Hudson (1-1) went 1.1 innings for the win in relief, and Tyler Davis got the last two hitters for his first save of the season.

Kerry Carpenter (knee) returned to the Tigers and went 1-for-2 with a single and a strikeout.
