Three individuals, state runner-up teams heading into DeWitt Athletic Hall of Fame

A class of three individuals and two teams will be inducted into the DeWitt High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 26.

Brothers Larry and Hugh Bates, Dr. Mark Schaar, the 2003-04 boys basketball team and the 2014-15 girls basketball team make up the 2025 class of inductees, who will be honored at halftime of DeWitt’s football game against East Lansing.

Larry Bates, a 1976 graduate, was the first two-time individual wrestling state champion in school history.

Hugh Bates, who graduated in 1978, was also a two-time wrestling state champion.

Schaar is an honorary member and has been a longtime team doctor in football. He has spent the last 37 seasons on the sidelines.

The 2003-04 boys basketball team finished as the Class B state runner-up to Detroit Renaissance in coach Ron Marlan’s debut season as coach.

The 2014-15 girls basketball team was the Class A state runner-up to Bloomfield Hills Marian and went 25-2 under the direction of coach Bill McCullen.
