Detroit police are searching for a suspect in a shooting Monday on the city’s west side that left a teenager injured.
Officers responded around 5:30 p.m. to the 14400 block of Fenkell Avenue and found a 16-year-old with a gunshot wound.
The teenager was in stable condition Tuesday morning, said Officer Jalon Nelson, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department.
Detectives are following up on leads in search of the suspect, Nelson said.
Violence involving youth has been a focus in Detroit in recent weeks after two teens were charged in connection with a “teen takeover” event downtown.
One of the teens, Ramon Javon Perez Smith, was charged with assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and three counts of bodily harm for allegedly shooting a 14-year-old during the takeover.
The other teen linked to the event was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield and Todd Bettison, the city’s police chief, previously unveiled a six-point community safety plan that stresses working with the community. It includes a “DPD Safe Summer Strategy” that targets drag racing, drifting, block party compliance and crowd control as well as creating productive youth-centered events.
