Fifth Third Bank has finalized the list of Comerica Bank branches in Michigan that it plans to close this summer, with some changes from what was initially anticipated.
The newly revised list calls for 75 branch closures, with 55 of them legacy Comerica branches and the remaining 20 existing Fifth Third branches.
The timing of the closure would vary by specific location, but all closures are expected to happen before Sept. 3 and Sept. 4, which is when Fifth Third plans to convert all Comerica customers to the Fifth Third system and drop the Comerica Bank name for good.
Following the closures, there will be a 227 total Fifth Third branches across Michigan, with 116 branches in the five-county metro Detroit region. Last summer, there were 163 Fifth Third branches and 143 Comerica branches in Michigan, according to FDIC data.
Cincinnati-based Fifth Third acquired Texas-based Comerica this past February in a $12.7 billion all-stock deal.
Already, Fifth Third and legacy Comerica customers have interchangeable access at ATMs, meaning that Comerica customers can use their Comerica cards in Fifth Third ATMs, and vice versa.
The new and finalized list of branch closures has roughly the same number of closures as the initial list, but a few specific branches were taken off and others added, according to Fifth Third officials.
“We constantly evaluate our branch footprint to ensure future locations are conveniently located to meet the needs of our customers,” Steve Davis, Michigan Regional President for Fifth Third Bank, said in a statement on Monday, June 1.
In a recent Free Press interview, Davis said that even with the planned branch closures, customers will gain access to more branches than they had before the merger deal.
“If you were a Comerica customer, pre-merger, you’ll now have 60% more branches available to you,” Davis said. “If you were a Fifth Third customer before, you’ll have 40% to 45% more branches available to you.”
Even though the list shows three Comerica branches closing within the city of Detroit, customers will still have 19 Fifth Third branches in Detroit to choose from, bank officials said.
“While we are eliminating and consolidating some branches, on average, customers will have a lot more branches available to them,” Davis said. “Generally they will be closer to their office, to their home.
He added, “We’re taking people from the branches that are being closed and moving them over to the receiving branch where possible, so customers have some continuity of experience.”
Fifth Third notified the state last month that it plans to lay off 502 workers at what was Comerica’s Great Lakes Campus in Farmington Hills between July and November.
Davis told the Free Press that he doesn’t anticipate any more layoffs of that magnitude as part of the Fifth Third/Comerica integration.
There also will be a new name for Comerica Park, where the Detroit Tigers play, once the 2026 baseball season is over. The stadium’s future name has not yet been announced.
