State police finish investigation into East Lansing police shooting

LANSING — Michigan State Police have finished the agency’s investigation into the fatal police shooting of Isaiah Kirby in East Lansing in April, and it’s been sent to the state Attorney General’s Office for review.

Ingham County Prosecutor John Dewane noted the investigation was complete in a news release on Tuesday, June 2, saying he recused his office from reviewing the case for potential police malfeasance.

State police presented findings to his office, and he referred them to the AG, Dewane said.

That’s consistent with his office’s policy regarding fatal officer-involved shootings, said Dewane, who also noted he has “both a personal and professional relationship with the alleged stabbing victim, Douglas Mielock, creating a conflict of interest in the matter.”

Kirby, 21, of Owings Mills, Maryland, was shot and killed by East Lansing police officers in the area of Lake Lansing and Abbot roads on April 15 during an incident that involved a theft call and a stabbing call.

“Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered Isaiah Kirby, who was armed with a knife and running toward responding officers,” Dewane said in his news release. “Multiple officers discharged their service weapons, resulting in the death of Mr. Kirby.”

Mielock was stabbed multiple times in a parking lot, allegedly by Kirby, but is recovering from his injuries, officials have said.
