A 14-year-old boy caught a fish with his bare hands on a flooded Petoskey area road, and his aunt caught the whole thing on video.
Gavin Bruney, 14, was traveling with Amy Hasty, his aunt, on Channel Road along Crooked Lake, east of Petoskey, last Thursday, she said. They were heading home, Hasty said.
At some point, a UPS truck that was also traveling in the area stopped, as did the car Hasty and Gavin were in.
Hasty said Gavin spotted a fish swimming across the flooded roadway, jumped out of the car, and plucked the animal out of the water with his hands.
“First fish of the season!” he exclaimed in the video while he proudly displayed his catch, and his aunt laughed.
“Because of the flooding, the road was closed down to one way,” Hasty told The Detroit News. “We were traveling home and waiting for UPS to go through the flooded area when suddenly we saw something in the water in front of him.”
She said the UPS driver stopped, and they all jumped out of their vehicles to see what it was.
“Gavin loves fish and fishing, so he jumped right in without a reserve of getting wet,” Hasty said.
She said her nephew later released the northern pike back into the water.
