Deshawn Steven Johnson was arraigned on Monday in 48th District Court in Bloomfield Hills on a count of bank robbery, according to authorities.

A magistrate set Johnson’s bond at $1 million and scheduled his next court hearing for April 16, court records said.

If convicted, the 51-year-old faces up to life in prison.

“Bank robberies endanger employees and customers,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement issued Tuesday. “This case sends a message to would-be robbers: Oakland County law enforcement will track you down, and we will hold you accountable.”

Court records on Tuesday did not list an attorney for Johnson.

Police said Mi BANK was robbed around 2 p.m. Wednesday. The bank is located on West Maple Road near Lahser Road.

Prosecutors said the suspect had an appointment at the bank.

Investigators said bank employees told them a man entered the business and demanded money. Employees also said the suspect implied he had a weapon.

Detectives said the suspect showed a clerk a message on his phone that read: “Robbery, give me all the $100.00’s and $50.00’s, No Disturbances.”

They said the teller complied, and he left before officers arrived. Police said the suspect fled the scene in a black van.

Prosecutors said the suspect left the bank with $1,900.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect, police said.

Detectives said they developed Johnson as a suspect through their investigation and located him in Southfield. Prosecutors said investigators used a license plate reading system and video from nearby security cameras to identify the suspect’s van.

Bloomfield Township police arrested Johnson with the assistance of police from Southfield and Troy. In addition, officers recovered money they believe was stolen from Mi Bank.

Police said Johnson has several prior convictions for bank robbery.

He was convicted in Oakland County Circuit Court of bank robbery in 2001 and sentenced to 5 to 40 years in prison, according to court records.

Others in Michigan have been charged with bank robbery in the last year.

In October, a 52-year-old Sterling Heights man accused of robbing a bank and fleeing on a bicycle in July was ordered to stand trial on charges.

In July, a Dearborn Heights man was charged after authorities said he struck a bank employee in the head with a hatchet during a robbery.

In March 2025, a Pontiac man was charged after allegedly robbing a Waterford Township sandwich shop and a bank in Independence Township.
