Storms are expected to develop in the afternoon and evening on Saturday, Aug. 15 in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula could impact the Lansing area with potentially severe conditions, though the worst is forecast to be in the southwest corner of the state.
“The main area of concern is along and south of the I-96 corridor,” the Grand Rapids National Weather Service said on X on Aug. 14. “The main threat is damaging winds. Heavy rain is possible, minor flooding is possible especially the I-94 corridor.”
Storms are expected to arrive around noon Saturday and last until 8 p.m., moving west to east across the Lower Peninsula. Storms could produce hail, tornadoes, flash floods and winds up to 60 mph. Statewide, highs are expected to be in the 70s to 80s through the weekend. Lansing will see a high near 81 degrees Saturday with a low around 69 degrees.
Saturday’s storms are expected to hit the southwest region of Michigan the hardest, including Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, Branch and Hillsdale counties.
Southeast Michigan is expected to see storms develop most likely from 6 p.m. to midnight tapering off by 2 a.m., according to the Detroit NWS.
Officials urge residents to ensure multiple ways of receiving weather alerts just in case Saturday’s storms, Aug. 15, intensify or change direction.
On Sunday, Aug. 16, there are chances for showers and thunderstorms statewide, though conditions are forecast to be less severe.
Lansing is forecast to see rain after 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, with a high of 83 degrees. At night, rain is possible before 8 p.m. with a low of 61 degrees, per the NWS.
