Saugatuck City Council awarded a major construction project on Maple Street to Schippers Excavating for $4.33 million on Feb. 9.
According to Public Works Superintendent Scott Herbert, two other bids were received from Redline Excavating ($4.78 million) and Milbocker and Sons ($5.37 million).
During the same meeting, councilmembers approved a $318,700 proposal for construction engineering services from Fleis and Vandenbrink Engineering.
Planned improvements include road rehabilitation, water main replacement, concrete sidewalks, culvert repairs, water service extensions and replacements, sanitary sewer repairs and stormwater detention.
There will also be improvements to Mary Street, resurfacing of the driveway at DPW, and seawall and concrete improvements at Coghlin Park and Wicks Park.
In his report, Herbert said the multi-jurisdictional project includes funding from property owners, the Michigan Department of Transportation, Saugatuck and Saugatuck Township.
Some components of the project, including concrete and seawall repairs, will be completed before Memorial Day. Others, including road rehabilitation on Maple Street, should be completed by mid-November.
