OTTAWA LAKE – Glory Speweik scored 21 points in the first seven games of her varsity basketball career at Whiteford.
She matched that total in one night and helped the Bobcats get their first victory of the season on Thursday, Jan. 8.
The sophomore’s 21-point performance led Whiteford to a 52-19 victory over Britton Deerfield.
“She had the game of her life,” Whiteford coach Nick Kopp said. “She probably had four or five steals and three or four assists. I don’t even think she knew she was capable of a game like this.”
Speweik, who had just hit just two 3-pointers in her career, drilled four in the game.
She and the rest of the starters sat out the fourth quarter back Whiteford had a big lead.
The Bobcats improved to 1-7.
“Today was a big moment for not only our team, but for our program,” said Kopp, who is in his first season as a head coach. “The girls have been working really hard. I kept telling them, ‘I know we are 0-7, but we’re not 0-7 bad. Just keep working.’”
Kopp believes the win could change the course of the season for his team.
“This instills some confidence,” he said. “We’ve got some winnable games coming up. Now, we’ve got our first one.”
