The boys from Erie Mason-Ida left the pool after Day 1 feeling like champions. The second day was just a bonus.

Coach Andy Mosley’s team captured seventh place in the Division 3 finals at Holland Aquatic Center on Saturday, March 14.

“Yesterday was emotional,” the coach said of the opening day. “We got all our events but one through to the finals. Everyone used everything they had. We broke four school records.”

David Mills broke the oldest record on the board, going :47.86 on the opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay. He eclipsed a standard set by Randy Schardt in 1989.

Mosley now owns the oldest school record with a time he recorded in the individual medley in 1995.

Mills also broke records in the 500 freestyle (4:46.77) and was part of record-setting medley (1:39.58) and 400 freestyle (3:14.97) relays.

“It was awesome for David,” Mosely said.

Mason finished three places ahead of Riverview, which beat the Eagles in the Southeast Michigan Independent Swimming League finals last weekend.

“We finished above pretty much everyone in Southeast Michigan except (champion Cranbrook) Kingswood,” Mosely said.
