Ford Motor Co. told its car dealers this week that it expects to add a four-door gasoline-powered sedan version of the Mustang to its lineup by the end of the decade, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The Detroit Free Press has confirmed the report with a car dealer who was at the dealer meeting with Ford in Las Vegas earlier this week. That’s where Ford revealed an image of the four-door Mustang and the plans around it. The dealer asked to not be named because they are not authorized to speak publicly about this subject.
The dealer said the four-door Mustang he saw resembles the current model but with four doors and a more sedan shape to it.
“It’s a gorgeous car. It’s superb looking,” the dealer told the Detroit Free Press. “They did a fabulous job on it.”
Ford spokesman Mark Truby told the Detroit Free Press Ford does not comment on future product speculation.
That’s because automakers sometimes have to cancel future product plans if the market shifts. For example, as the Detroit Free Press reported last fall, an all-electric vehicle General Motors was going to build for American Honda Motor at GM’s Spring Hill Assembly plant in Tennessee was canceled.
The Ford dealer who went to the Las Vegas meeting earlier this week, where Executive Chair Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley were in attendance, said Ford told them the four-door pony car will not go on sale until the end of the decade, noting it was unclear if the car will be a 2028 model or a 2029 model. But the reason Ford is considering doing the four-door variant is simple, he said, “they want the sedan to broaden the appeal and make it a vehicle that a young family can use.”
He said Ford did not indicate what kind of engine it would have, but according to the WSJ report two of the people they interviewed said the car would have hybrid power; one of the people said it would be a hybrid V-8.
Ford introduced the Mustang to the world in 1964 and since then it’s been a top-selling sports car. Currently, Ford offers the gasoline-powered Mustang in a variety of configurations from a four-cylinder coupe that starts at about $33,000 up to a high-end performance coupe that tops $100,000 and even the ultra-high performance Mustang GTD that tops $300,000.
Ford’s sales of the Mustang have been strong this year. Through the end of July, Ford has sold 32,131 Mustangs, a 15.7% boost compared with the year-ago period. Meanwhile, sales of Ford’s profit-making pickups are down 8% to 683,375 sold from January through the end of July. Sales of Ford brand SUVs are down 13.4% to 460,960 in the period.
Since the mid-2000s, Detroit automakers have increasingly lost marketshare for sedans to foreign competitors as Detroit phased out car production in lieu of the richer profits that pickups and large SUVs deliver. But as the Detroit Free Press reported in May, the thought of sedans is an idea never far from Ford CEO Jim Farley’s lips.
For the past several months, Farley has been unable to resist mentioning sedans even though the Dearborn-based automaker stopped making them in 2020. In August 2025, Farley told YouTube Channel’s “Forrest’s Auto Review” of a sedan: “We’re thinking about, ‘Should Ford do a rear-wheel-drive, high-performance, affordable sedan with a really cool closure system in the back … as an all-electric?’ “
Farley again teased the idea of a sedan in an appearance on the “Rapid Response” podcast that aired April 17, saying Ford has gotten its manufacturing costs competitive enough where it might make sense to reconsider the sedan, adding, “If we do compete in those, I would say, ubiquitous segments we better bring something new to the table.”
But other Detroit automakers also may be giving sedans consideration. General Motors is reportedly planning to launch its first Buick sedan since 2020, when it discontinued the Regal. The timing and other details about such a vehicle are unknown other than reports saying the small car would be built alongside and on the same platform as the next-generation Cadillac CT5 and the Chevrolet Camaro. GM produces those cars at its Lansing Grand River assembly plant.
Across town, Stellantis Chief Design Officer Ralph Gilles said in an interview with “Car Design News” earlier this year that he’s “fatigued” with SUVs and that, for him, “the SUV craze has kind of come and gone.”
“A lot of people are asking for sedans. Young designers want hatchbacks like the GTI of the 1980s. They want a personal car that’s fun to drive and easy to park,” Gilles said. “It’s making us rethink different form factors.”
Stellantis sells two sedans in the United States: the Dodge Charger and the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
