A popular Big Ten football specific podcast does not have high expectations for the Spartans in 2025.
Like many others, The Big Ten Huddle podcast has recently released their floor and ceiling records for every Big Ten team this week. For Michigan State, the records aren’t particularly impressive…
The podcast has Michigan State’s floor at a lousy 3-9 (which I would assume means two of those wins are over Western Michigan and Youngstown State) and 7-5 as the ceiling. For perspective, Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports recently did a similar exercise for each of the Big Ten teams, and he had the Spartans ceiling at 9-3, with the floor the same at 3-9.
In comparing to similar teams in the league, the podcast had Nebraska with a floor of 4-8 and ceiling of 10-2, Minnesota with a floor of 5-7 and ceiling of 9-3, and Maryland with a floor of 2-10 and ceiling of 8-4. Interestingly, the podcast also had Northwestern with a higher ceiling than the Spartans of 8-4.
In my opinion, the ceiling for the Spartans should be higher — I would more align with Fornelli at 9-3 than 7-5 as The Big Ten Huddle podcast has it. I also find the floor of 3-9 being low and very unlikely to happen.
