LEROY TWP. — A man who died after his vehicle crashed into a tree near Webberville early on Sept. 1 has been identified as Josiah Rettig, 40, of Gregory.
The crash happened about 3 a.m. Monday in the area of Elm and Frost roads and was connected to reports of a man driving recklessly and waving a firearm, according to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, which released Rettig’s name on Sept. 2.
In a Sept. 1 news release, sheriff’s officials said deputies and officers from the Meridian Township and Williamston police departments were called to the 300 block of W. Grand River Avenue around 3 a.m. for reports of an intoxicated man carrying a long gun in a parking lot.
The man left the lot before police arrived and drove southbound on Elm, officials said. Several people called 911 to report someone driving recklessly and waving a gun, including one caller who said the vehicle crashed into a tree, they said.
Police set up a perimeter around the vehicle, which was found on fire in a wooded area, and the sound of gunshots and ammunition exploding could be heard, according to the release.
The Ingham Regional Special Response Team and the Lansing Police Department Special Tactics and Rescue Team also responded to the scene.
Anyone with information is asked to call Deputy Kevin Stalzer at 517-676-8444, extension 1939.
