A premature baby delivered after a two-vehicle crash in Bloomfield Township died on Mother’s Day, according to officials.
The collision occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, in front of an IHOP at 2187 S. Telegraph Road, according to a Bloomfield Township Police Department news release.
A black Jeep was headed north on Telegraph when it broadsided a white Honda that was headed east from a median turn-around, police said. Witnesses told officers the Jeep ran a red light at the crossing.
Three people were in the Honda, including a passenger who was 23 weeks pregnant, according to police. She had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, where she underwent an emergency delivery.
The infant died a day after the crash, on Sunday, May 11.
A child passenger in the Honda was properly secured in a car seat and sustained minor injuries. Both drivers were also injured and hospitalized.
The South Oakland County Crash Investigation Team is assisting with the investigation, which remains ongoing. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call 248-433-7755.
