The Detroit Pistons have four players on their 15-man roster whose contracts expire at the end of June, joining the frenzy that is 2026 NBA free agency.
Jalen Duren will become a restricted free agent once the Pistons make him the one-year qualifying offer in June, meaning the Pistons will be able to match any offer from a competitor – should it get that far.
Tobias Harris, Kevin Huerter and Javonte Green will each be an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team.
NBA teams can begin negotiating with their own free agents on the first day after the end of the NBA Finals (potential Game 7 is June 19).
Harris is the most significant of the UFA trio as a two-year starter since the Pistons signed him to a two-year, $52 million contract in the 2024 offseason. The Pistons will have Early Bird rights on Harris, who will turn 34 in July, meaning they can be over the salary cap and still re-sign him.
The Pistons are likely to choose to act as an “over the cap team,” meaning they can use salary cap mechanisms to re-sign their own players despite being over the cap.
To be a “room” team and create cap space, they’d have to renounce the rights to Harris and Huerter, though they could bring them back on a smaller salary using cap space or an exception.
NBA free agency negotiations for all players begin June 30 at 6 p.m. ET. The 2026-27 NBA league year starts July 1, when the mortarium period begins and restricted free agents can sign an offer sheet from another team. July 6 at 12:01 p.m. ET is when deals can become official.
Should Duren sign an offer sheet, the Pistons would then have 24 hours to make a decision (by July 7 at noon).
The Pistons also have three more contractual decisions to make.
