Pinckney’s community garden will see systemic improvements in 2026, alongside a new initiative to help residents in need access fresh food.
The garden is a shared space for residents to grow produce and participate in community-based agriculture at 135 W. Main St. The concept was established in 2022.
This year, participants will notice a simplified registration process, clearly defined seasonal guidelines and a structured plot assignment system “designed to ensure fairness and ease of participation,” according to a release.
Plots will be available on a first come, first served basis upon registration and payment.
A portion of the garden will be designated for growing produce to support a community pantry. Officials expect to expand the initiative through partnerships with local farms and organizations to include meat, dairy and other goods, according to the release.
The effort is supported by a collaboration with the ROW Foundation, which is assisting with community outreach and exploring transportation support options for residents who may need help accessing the new resources.
“This initiative reflects (a) commitment to strengthening community connection while addressing real needs,” Village President Jeff Buerman wrote in the release.
The updates are part of a broader beautification effort taking place throughout downtown Pinckney.
“By integrating the garden with a food access component and investing in the surrounding space, (we’re) creating something that will serve residents in a lasting and meaningful way,” Buerman wrote.
Future ideas for the garden include the development of a central gathering area for educational programming, volunteer engagement and community events.
